20.05.2020Bubbles and splits in veneer are normally caused by water damage. To repair those unsightly imperfections, start by lightly sanding the area of Cherry Wood Veneer Dining Table Yellow damage. Your goal in sanding is to remove any sharp edges or irregularities. Remove as little of the finish as possible while sanding. Using a toothpick, spread a small amount of wood glue under the split or bubble. Lay a clean linen towel on top of the furniture to protect the surface and place a heavy book or brick on top of the repair to hold the veneer down tightly until the glue has dried thoroughly.
Remove the towel and lightly sand the area once more. Choose a water-based wood stain that most closely matches the finish. Test your color choice by doing a patch test in an inconspicuous place to ensure you've chosen the correct shade.
Apply using a cotton swab. Wipe off excess with a clean cloth. Let the product dry thoroughly and reapply until you've achieved the desired color. For chips in veneer, use wood putty to make a repair. Wood putty comes in different wood tones. Chose a shade that closely matches the existing veneer. Apply the putty with a flexible knife. Use a damp cloth to remove excess putty from the edges of your repair before it sets. Once completely dry, lightly sand the repaired area.
Use wood stain with a built in semi-gloss finish to blend the repair to the veneer as unobtrusively as possible. If a piece of veneer has come loose from the furniture and you still have the piece, it is possible to have it reattached.
Missing Veneer Pieces — Replacing missing sections of veneer is easy but finding a good match may be difficult. If needed, apply medium heat with an iron covered with a soft cloth to soften the glue. If the missing area has ragged edges you will want to clean them up with a razor blade. Next, cover the patch area with a piece of paper and rub gently with a pencil to make a pattern for the patch. Clean and prepare the area and glue in the patch as described for loose veneer above.
If using new veneer, you will need to experiment with stains to get the patch color matched as closely as possible with the rest of the piece. Blisters — Small blisters may be repaired with heat. Cover the area with a smooth piece of cardboard and apply medium heat with an iron. Once it has flattened, clamp or weight the area for 24 hours. A large blister may need to be slit with a razor blade before it is heated. If you have a treasured or expensive piece, you may want to call in a skilled, experience craftsman, but if you are comfortable with these simple repairs, go ahead and make your furniture look like new.
