Installing a Front-Mounted Workbench Vise 7. This entry was posted in Accesories on April 8, by Bill Kovalick. Can you imagine not having a vise on your workbench? Me neither.  I bought a Jorgensen model vise from a fellow woodworker who bought it some years ago but never got around to installing it. It was in new condition and I got it at a discount. It’s a heavy duty beast that weighs about 36 pounds with 10″ wide jaws. What’s not to like?  The installation instructions for the vise specify that the table thickness must be at least /4″. This positions the top of the vice flush with the table surface. I opted for a combined thickness (table + spacer block) of about /4″ which recesses the vise 1/2″ below the surface. The Benchcrafted Moxon Vise mounts to any workbench, raising your workpiece to a comfortable, ergonomic position and holding it rock solid. If you cut dovetails or other joints by hand, a Moxon vise will completely change your experience with these tasks. No longer do you need to strain your back when cutting dovetails at the lower height of your main bench.  The Moxon hardware can be used to build a "bench on bench" Moxon vise. A work surface is added to the rear jaw to act as a separate bench top. It's the ideal bench accessory for cutting and marking out dovetails with its large work surface.  All hardware needed to build the vise. See our installation instructions below for complete package contents. Purchase. Moxon Vise Hardware. Hardware only, no wood. $ Add to cart. Do you need three vises on a workbench? No, not really. There are plenty of ways to hold material on a workbench without any vises. But vises are incredibly handy and the three I chose for this workbench are all different and individually perform better in certain situations. The quick release cast iron vise I chose was the most expensive but also the quickest and easiest to install.  The Quick Release Vise For Workbench Installation only thing to do to this vise after installing it is to add some wood jaws. You don’t want the cast iron vise jaws touching your work piece as you tighten down the vise because the cast iron will dent and damage your work. I used a couple of /2” thick scrap blocks from making the workbench for the vise jaws. Next up is the DIY pipe clamp twin screw vise.
