If the surface actually looks better after finishing too, then using these tools as bs final step before finishing is a no-brainer! Recently, Smoothing Plane Method I was working on some beautiful smoothing plane vs sanding walnut for my Jewelry Box and after passing the boards through the drum sander, the beautiful figure was dull and muddy. Like magic, the grain popped back to life! While I was at it, I also included a test sandinng a card scraper.
