Not a gorgeous hardwood, it is perfect for drawer sides, backs and runners. It's called red oak because of its bark, not the color of the wood, but it is slightly redder than white oak.

When used for tables and legs, it is durable. It performs adequately on the lathe, about as well as walnut. Its color is uniform, which makes it easy for joining. Planing it and sanding it is fairly easy.

I like to use the reddish stains on it, like Varathane Classic red mahogany and red oak and not the walnut stains. Beware painting it because the tannins in the wood will leach through.
