End grain can be just as ornery in wood turning. Hollowing into end grain requires a different approach than hollowing into face grain. With a face- grain turning, a gouge is used in a cutting action that travels from the rim to the center (see FWW #, p. 52). In this orientation, the bevel of the gouge rubs against the inside wall while cutting the wood fibers in the direction of the grain. However, a gouge does just the opposite when hollowing into end grain. Rather than laying down the fibers, it tears them. To our benefit, wood turners have relied on a solution that dates back many centu. Wood grain is the longitudinal arrangement of wood fibers or the pattern resulting from this. R. Bruce Hoadley wrote that grain is a "confusingly versatile term" with numerous different uses, including the direction of the wood cells (e.g., straight grain, spiral grain), surface appearance or figure, growth-ring placement (e.g., vertical grain), plane of the cut (e.g., end grain), rate of growth (e.g., narrow grain), and relative cell size (e.g., open grain). Wood workers will find a wood turning project for creating a beautiful bowl in end grain.  Recently I was asked on the user group, www.- rning, to explain how to turn a natural edged, end grain bowl. That is, a bowl with the grain running parallel to the lathe bed and the edge of the log left as the bowl edge. If you want a smooth edged bowl, just turn the piece round as you start. It will make sense as we go. I cut a piece of yellow birch to rough out a natural edged bowl and found it to be wonderfully spalted. During the process I cut a slice off the end to get past any cracks. This wood is too good to waste so I have decided to use the slice for this bowl. I will have.

I was out collecting some wood for turning the other day. Just what I was looking for. I got some ash and beech a couple months ago. A neighbor was cutting down some small trees and I grabbed some choice pieces.

I brought them home and stuck them off to the side and forgot about them. I figured I would seal the ends when End grain wood turning on got around to it. Guess what, I never got around to it and it looks like the pieces will be ruined for wood turning.

Very disappinted since I had some burls and other pieces that looked interesting. So reminder to self …. So, I grabbed my new pine pieces. Had some old Latex paint laying around and promtly painted the ends to seal them.

The theory goes like this. The ends will dry quicker while the wood in the middle of the log stays nice and wet. Basically you can use any ole paint you have laying around for end sealing, some swear by it others think a commercial end sealer is better. Put in on thick and store it outside gdain cover if you can.

A good place to find cheap paint is your local Home Depot, Gdain or Lowes …. A gallon of paint goes woor long way when sealing ends. There is a commercial product made specifically for sealing the end of wet woodwether small stuff like we use or whole tree trunks.

If I was doing a project where I wanted to be absolutely sure there was not splitting, checking or cracking I would use Anchor Seal. Rick from RickTurns shows us another way to seal end grain on your woodturning logs using Elmers Glue. Notice end grain wood turning on nice little jig he set up to slice his logs into slabs and other usable features. A pretty interesting video since he actually performed some tests on the best method to keep logs from splittng!

A product similar to AnchorSeal but cheaper. Next time they have free delivery I think I will grab a gallon to use on some of my choice wood finds. AnchorSeal Stops Logs from Checking and Splitting There is a commercial product made specifically for sealing the end end grain wood turning on wet woodwether small stuff like we use or whole tree trunks. I have always used Rockler Green….

I have always end grain wood turning on Rockler Green Wood end sealer or Anchorseal to seal the ends of my wood. It will seal the wood from cracking until you are ready to use it. Another advantage is, I end grain wood turning on it keeps bugs out of the wood. The wood I bring in tuning not only crack free but bug free. Had 3 trees taken down and milled into lumber. This product is great, easy to apply and clean up.

I fully expect my boards to have no end-checking after they dry out. Great end seal. I notices some sap coming through later in the day and I brushed more enr them. Easy clean as instructed used hot water only to clean my brush.

So far so good. Thanks to one of the Rockler sales rep. I am definitely going to buy more of this end grain wood turning on.

Nov 09,  · A lidded box, to be sucessfull must be turned end grain because of warping. Wood is continually moving, meaning distorting. With end grain turnings, the movement is just about equal in all directions, while with cross grain it isn't. This, of course would result in . Aug 24,  · When I turn end grain, such as small lidded boxes, or hollow forms, I am as apt to grab a gouge, followed by a scraper to finish up, as I am to use the little Hunter tool. A lot depends on the design of what I am trying to do. End grain can be very problematic, there are lots of . The bowl turning grain orientation for most wood bowls is a side-grain orientation. However, end-grain bowls, less common than side-grain bowls, can be turned from a .
