It is quite easy to build your own bed frame, and to get your mattress up off the floor from the dust and summer bugs. You can make it as fancy as you want with a carving tool, and carve figures or patterns in the wood afterward, or even paint and stain it to match your room's decor. Step 1 - Bed Height. The first thing you want to figure out before assembling your bed frame is how high you want it off the ground. Your main bed posts simply have to be measured the correct distance from the bottom of the side rails. From the bottom of the side rails, after the supports and base are in plac   Your bed frame is nearly complete, now just to make it so that it will hold your box spring and mattress. I was also a little limited by the tools I had around, as I had already moved many of the tools from my old workshop. So the only power tools I used in building this bed were a table saw, a hand drill, a small power planer, and a belt sander. I spent under $30 on materials, although I already had the screws and dowels. If I had bought everything, it would still have been under $ I didn't actually use a single 2x4. Rather, I used spruce lumber normally used for framing. I used three 2x8's, one 2x6, one 2x10, and two 2x2's. I noticed you posted a link to the diy stains and 2x said you used recipe 7, but I am a little bit confused because when I went to the page, recipe 7 was a recipe for staining wood colors like blue? Pop in your bed and enjoy a well-deserved good night's sleep. Continue to Content. Build a bed frame out of 2x4 a queen size box spring is a struggle and a half. Can I use a full plywood sheet instead of slats? You can add baskets, pull out drawers, or just basic doors, and all come in a variety of colors. Would like to do this but modify it for a horizontal bed.

There are lots of ways to build a platform bed with all sorts of styles. This is a simple box bed with legs and slats. We started by cutting and sanding all our wood to the dimensions needed see the how-to card below for the full cut list.

I usually use the Kreg K4 , but since these are big, long 2x6s, it is a lot easier to clamp on the brand new Kreg directly to the wood. The has a thickness gauge which allows you to determine the exact thickness of your wood and then set everything on the to that thickness. You can set the jig itself and the stop collar on the drill bit to the same dimension to avoid any miscues. This will also tell you what length screw to use.

Since we were using 2x4s, we subtracted 7 inches from the long sides and 3 inches from the short sides to account for the other pieces. We popped the mattress into the frame and it fit perfectly. We love how this DIY platform bed turned out. It is sleek and modern and takes up much less space than the old bed.

Our plan before was to build casings to go around the old headboard and foot board because I was worried about building an actual bed. This build might seem like a larger-scale build, but it was extremely simple. It was all made so much easier thanks to the versatility of the Kreg Jig. We still need to build a headboard, but this plan for how to build a platform bed is super simple to Build Your Own Queen Bed Frame 2020 follow!

You can use any species of wood to build this platform bed. We chose pine because it is the cheapest wood at the hardware store and we wanted to complete this project on a small budget. No, you can use any mattress on this bed. That is the beauty of a platform bed — the mattress sits directly on the wood.

There are a few factors that will determine how much it costs to build your platform bed. The main one is type of lumber used. The second factor is what tools or supplies you have on hand or can borrow. You can build this platform bed in just a day.

If you want to build a platform bed for a twin, queen or king mattress, you can use the same instructions, but you'll need to scale them appropriately. This bed is designed to be taken apart and reassembled.

If you want to cut, sand and stain all your pieces in your workshop, you can then construct it in the bedroom entirely or build in the garage, take apart and reassemble. As an Amazon Associate and member of other affiliate programs, I earn from qualifying purchases.

We decided to go with pine and are in the process of building the bed right now. We spent around on the wood.. We are having so much fun and love building it.

Since this is our first project we are finding out several things. We also found it is SO much easier to drill pilot holes for the screw on the boards It was some what difficult to sand some of them when we had it all put together. I am not sure if those are things people should know and we just missed them. Also, I wanted to let you know that there is a mistake in your wood to buy.

You need 2 2x4's not one. We also found that you have to screw in the spacers at the end of each side. We just glued them and left them over night and then this morning when we put the posts on and went to pick it up, they came out Thanks so much for your plan.

We really are having a good time working with it and cant wait to start the 2nd bed. We have two little boys that both want one. I am so inspired by your talent and your ability to just do it. I never thought I could but your directions look quite simple. I would love to make this bed for my son. I would really appreciate it. Love LOve this bed! How would I make it for a full size mattress? Thanks for all the awesome plans!

Your site is really inspiring. We're considering building a bunk bed. Hi Tom, I made the changes as you stated to better fit a 75" twin.

Thanks for noticing this. If we wanted to add slats to avoid using a box spring, would we need to use a different sized board for the side rail? Would 2x6 still work or should we use 2x8 if that exists, I've never seen that size but never actually looked for it.

Sweet pea bunk bed. Trimmed and ready for Christmas - Dollhouse. Once these four pieces are joined, the four gussets will be installed flush to the bottom of each frame corner. If the frame is square, both measurements will be equal. Photo By: Frank Murray. Once the panels are cut, start assembling the four pieces. Before installing the gussets, make sure the frame is square by checking the diagonal measurements.

Mark the cut-out with a 10" line 2" in on two adjacent sides. Set your saw blade to a 2" depth and make these two 10"-long cuts cuts 1 and 2. Next, make the two perpendicular cuts with the same saw depth 10" from the end, cuts 3 and 4. There will now only be a small piece of wood connecting the cut-out corner and the drop. Make the two perpendicular cuts with the same saw depth 10" from the end, cuts 3 and 4.

Using a vibratory saw or a chisel, remove the final wood and clean up the inside corner. Glue the interior faces of the corner and finish nail to the bed frame.

Start by marking the cut-out with a 10" line 2" in on two adjacent sides. Install the two plywood ledger strips even with the bottom of the bed frame sides. Measure the distance between the bed frame sides in this case, 6' 5" and cut seven 2x4s to this length.

Next, install the cross slats 12" on center with one screw into the ledger on each end. We used 1x4s for our bed and added a middle leg to support the weight. But if you want to skip using a middle leg, make the cross slats using 2x4s. If solid legs have threaded rod in the tops, install the leg-mounting thread into the corner gusset on each side.

If the mounting thread is accessible, install a washer and nut, and tighten. The rod can be threaded into the wood by spinning the leg clockwise. Cut 8 pieces of trim to fit between the corner posts and install top and bottom around the perimeter of the frame with gauge finish nails. Caulk all joints and nail holes with a painter's caulk and allow to dry for 30 minutes. If you are using a box spring, you can skip this step but your mattress will likely sit above the frame instead of within it.
