The inspiration for the chair was pretty simple — I needed some chairs for our front porch. So I do custom designs for various folks — anywhere from a custom closet organizer to a queen bed made to fit between special window sills. This is a modern furniture plan of a wonderful retro modern style coffee table, perfect for your sunken living room or den! This table can be made from one piece of 4 foot by 8 foot plywood, a few dowels, and a jig saw and drill.

I love modern furniture plans. So how can I get what I want? Since I was just out of school, I had very little money to get those gorgeous pieces in my small apartment.

I started with a jig saw and a hand drill. Then I bought some low grade plywood and started to figure out how to build what I wanted. The results were better than expected. A far cry from the thousands to get the look I really wanted.

And as a bonus, it felt good to build my own furniture. These hid the groove completely and will prevent any dust from collecting in the groove. After 24 hours, I drilled pilot holes, countersunk, and screwed in some 2" deck nails where the legs were glued to the seat assembly.

The screws penetrated all the way into the seat frame. This helps prevent sheer forces weakening the glue joint. I also hid these screws with matching oak plugs. To prepare the chair for finishing, I sanded any imperfections and wiped all the dust off with a rag.

After letting the oil soak in for 24 hours, I put on a coat of polyurethane and sanded with grit sand paper. Yes you can glue the 'L' bracket directly to the legs. I would recommend wood glue. After 24 hrs, screw in a few 2" deck nails I did 3 per side. I would not recommend using dowels because it might pop out the side of the seat like you mentioned.

The stock I used was already smooth so I only had to do a little sanding around the joints to get the surface flush. Good luck! I decided our chairs needed a table to go along with the set. Almost gave up and was going to make my own ones from scratch until I found yours. Will probably adapt them a tiny bit and then make my own! Yep it's still rock solid. But if I were to make some improvements, I would consider making the arm rests wider and adding a head rest. Also choose the seat back angle that works for you by testing different angles on a prototype.

The angle I chose is perfect for watching TV or reading a book. Thanks for the reply. I think the arm rests are a design thing. They look nice small and even chamfered like the other guy who made your chair did. Im now looking into the design of the Selig Z-chair. Very slick looking design, with wide arm rests.

I think you could add those to your design without a problem. See red points in the drawing. In fact I had room to put 3 dowels 2 in the leg and 1 in the armchair. I just finished two for my daughter in law's birthday and they look as good as yours. I did move the joint on the leg forward so that the leg is supported by the joint and the back of the chair.
