Transfer the new angle to the grinding wheel platform. What you wood scraper sharpening oil The Scraper A card scraper is a rectangular piece of flat steel. Once you burnish the face, you have to turn the hook with the burnisher by running the burnisher across the edge. I hold the scraper and pull the burnisher across the edge similar to the way I peel a potato with a peeler.

Hone back and forth until you no longer feel a wire edge. It should only take a few strokes. Wipe the paddle on a damp rag to keep it clean and cutting efficiently. Adjust the scraper in the vise so the full length of its top edge feels even with the jig stick. Make sure the beveled side of the stick faces away from the scraper.

File the edge again, this time using the finer, single-cut side. Support the end of the file with the jig stick. Keep filing until you feel a faint wire edge on both sides, just like in Step 2.

Pushing the file at about degrees is called draw-filing. This produces a smoother edge than pushing the file in line with the edge, as shown in Step 2. Support the honing paddle with the jig stick to maintain a perfect degree edge.

Then hone both sides of the scraper, as shown in Step 4. Alternate honing the sides and the top four or five times. This is the only way to completely remove the wire edge.

Pull your thumbnail across the center and both ends of the scraper. If not, repeat Step 7. Burnish the edge into a concave shape. Remove the scraper from the vise and lubricate the burnisher with a few drops of oil. Press hard with your thumb directly over the edge.

Flip the scraper over and burnish the other side. Bend the cutting hook using the jig stick as a guide. Push the burnisher back and forth four or five times, applying hard pressure. Bend the scraper to stiffen the cutting edge. Place your thumbs near the bottom edge and pull back the ends with your fingers. Lean the scraper forward and push with your thumbs. A jig such as the Veritas Variable Burnisher allows you to turn a hook with little chance for error. If you are having difficulty with burnishing freehand, this is an excellent option.

But the truth is, we could get excellent results with all the edges. In fact, the only scraper that seemed to perform significantly different is one that I prepared with no hook. That one took only light shavings.

So how much pressure should you use when burnishing? Should you use one stoke? Two strokes? I stroke the edge until I can Wood Carving Gouge Sharpening Oil feel a burr. Then I stop. This takes two or three strokes. The jig gives you speed and consistency. And errors are rare. Most sources recommend adding a drop of oil to the edge before burnishing to prevent galling. Lay on a smear of oil and use the burnisher lightly to lay any remaining burr out flat. Now repeat the process of burnishing and turning the burr just as before.

Often you'll be able to do this several times before the edges are worn beyond easy repair. Then it will be time to pick up the file and start from scratch. Scrapers may be pushed or pulled as you please. Pulling is the soundest way to scrape large flat areas efficiently. With eight fingers distributing pressure evenly behind the blade, lean the top edge toward you as you pull it along the grain. To avoid creating a washboard effect, skew the scraper slightly, first to the left for a couple of strokes, then to the right, rather than facing it consistently perpendicular to the grain.

Pushing the scraper, with your thumbs bowing the center forward, narrows the cutting area and allows you to work very precisely, removing material from a narrow line or a specific spot without disturbing the surroundings. The scraper's high cutting angle makes it generate a lot of heat; it doesn't take long for your thumbs to start sizzling. A scraper holder, such as our Veritas model, lets you push or pull the tool as well as control the degree of bowing, without roasting yourself in the process.

High Friction Finger Wrap Tape can also protect against heat buildup. Many wood finishes, such as lacquers and varnishes, can be scraped smooth between Bosch Wood Router Tool Combo Kit Oil coats faster, flatter and with more control than with sandpaper.

Start by scraping across both ends of a piece; it's hard to start at the end without cutting too deep. Then scrape full length, skewing the tool and overlapping strokes just as on bare wood. A quick lick with grit sand paper or a medium Scotch-Brite pad completes the prep for the next coat of finish. Work at a moderate pace and be sure the scraper is sharp to avoid heating and scarring a fresh finish.

If you get inconsistent results, just keep on practicing. Troubleshooting is easy, because there aren't too many things that can go wrong. Most often you'll try to fool yourself into believing you've sharpened well even if the filed edge doesn't really feel sharp.

Sometimes you'll apply more pressure than necessary when turning the burr, and wind up with too coarse an edge. Try again; the rewards are worth much more than the work.
