I contacted Taylor Tools, and taytools jointer plane review 30 president of the company emailed me back. Once sharp it works well. This page works best with JavaScript. Deals and Shenanigans. All fixable with about 8 hours of work had to do it all plan hand as I do not have any machines for this kind of work and buying a new blade to get it into working order.

It only took me about 30 min on some sand paper and I had a sole that I was happy with. The blade took a bit more work to get flat. Overall it took me a solid 2. If you are new to hand tools and I can offer any advice - get high quality stones, a jig and learn how to use them. You can save a lot of money learning how to sharpen and adjust second hand and cheaper tools.

This jointer is the perfect example of that. It is not a premium hand plane. When I received the product first time, the sole was not at right angle to the side of the body.

It also had numerous dents. I left the message to the seller. They were prompt and sent me a new plane. The support said the replacement was examined in person before sending it. The new replacement had better body, but the paint was in poor quality and the blade was not at right angle.

I had to grind it before honing it. I had to sharpen the chip breaker as well. Now it works pretty good. I have a N6 WoodRiver. WR is heavier even though it is smaller. I may have to flatten the chip breaker little bit more because it chatters sometimes, or purchase a hock blade. One day, it may get broken somehow and I will have to find some more expensive replacement after buying my wife an expensive handbag.

The problem is this stuff last forever. Despite the less satisfied product review, I am giving 4 stars because of the amazing support.

I'd buy their product again. I'm just starting my adventures in woodworking. It became obvious pretty quickly that I needed a jointer plane. So I picked up this one. This plane has been awesome. I just cleaned the oil off the tool, tightened the screws and sharpened the blade and it works great. I am developing a feel for the plane and it's really quite enjoyable to use. I do this for fun and relaxation and using this plane is really fun.

It has also greatly increased my speed when flattening long boards for my first workbench project. Great tool for half the price of the high cost planes. I was looking for a reasonably priced jointer plane and stumbled upon this one. I saw the reviews and thought I would give it a try. The sole is dead flat and square to the sides which was my only real concern. So after flattening the back of the blade which took some time because it had a fairly big hollow, I honed the blade adjusted the frog and it works like a champ.

This bad boy is a beast and will give you a workout flattening a wide plank but it feels like quality when you use it. I am very pleased with this plane and would most definitely recommend it. It's big its beefy. It's flat. Once sharp it works well.

The handles are probably smaller than I'd ideally like but it works well and feels comfortable in the hand. Sole was flat out of the box.

Blade is on the thin side, but adequate. Easily sharpened and honed and, after planing a lot of southern yellow pine for a workbench build, seems to hold an edge really well. The handle is a little on the small side and doesn't fill the hand so can lead to discomfort after long usage. I may make a beefier handle for it after I finish a few projects.

Overall, I am very satisfied with my Taytools 7 Jointer Plane. At half the price of a very similar plane from Woodcraft or Rockler, it is a superb value. I will definitely buy Taytools again. Solid body and overall construction. Honestly about what I expected given that this is a third of the price of Nielsen or Veritas or Wood River. Blade took some work flattening and getting an edge as I expected but the chip breaker was just all around terrible.

Took a long time hand grinding that down on the stones so it will make contact at the nose of the blade.

Works great now but just know, it will not perform out of the box. If you are cheap like me and would rather put time into something than money, this is not a bad option. Sole was flat from the factory, chip breaker needed no work, I sharpened the iron and it took shavings. Excellent value especially as it is priced more reasonably than other planes that you could reasonably expect to be ready to work when you get them.

In the video at the top of this post, I show you the results planing long-grain and end-grain cherry with the degree blade.

With the degree blade installed I plane the same figured board with glass-smooth results. I then use the toothed blade to flatten the face of a rough mahogany board. Later, by request, I show how the 7 jointer plane, with its standard 45 degree angle, also produces a fairly rough result on the figured maple board.

To help put things in perspective, I am using brand new retail values from Lie-Nielsen. Obviously, we have to make a number of assumptions here and this plane will not be right for everyone in all situations. Also keep in mind these prices are for reference only and you could find much better prices in the used market or with other brands. Here are some supplies and tools we find essential in our everyday work around the shop. Thanks, Joe PS Always enjoy your vids—informative and fun. Millions of woodworkers get along fine without a low angle, bevel up plane. That type of plane has always been very rare until today. So the chance to find one on the second hand market at a nice price is low. How to deal with difficult grain is allready explained in the April issue of Popular woodworking magazine, learn to use the chipbreaker.

The Stanley 4 handles all issues that the bevel up can handle too, without the need to buy extra blades. Please learn more about the history of English and tool names. Joiners flattened rough timber and sometimes connected it at joints. Carpenters originally a cart or chariot maker put together rough sawn or hewn axe lumber into structures think timber framing. Block planes are so named because they are intended to finish the working surface of butcher blocks which is always end grain not because they are the size of a small block as I have read some people describe them.

Another issue is how often you want to be changing irons. As a hand tool user, when working stock up for a project, I change hand planes numerous times during the process.

Most of what you are using the smoother, high angle, toothed, and 90 irons for would be done with planers and sanders. That is one to look at it and it works if you only wanted one plane. Yet if you want to make a living at it then this is not the choice. For that price I can get a 4,5. How do I know that?

Well I just bought a set for a student who is wanting to get into the craft. I guess I might be lucky since I live in New England. Thanks for sharing. My LN62 is my favorite plane. By Marc Spagnuolo.
