The Lie-Nielsen No.8 Jointer is the longest and heaviest of Lie-Nielsen's production bench planes. It's a massive mm(24") long with an A2 cryogenically treated 66mm(/8") wide blade and weighing kg(10lbs). The No.8 is a s. Lie Nielsen No. 7 Jointer Plane. By Michael K. I am joijter to buy a low angle jointer '"7" from Lie Nielsen. Have anybody experience with it. VS regular angle? I haven't tried it but I can't plaane any advantages over a good standard jointer for violinmaking duties. If you do get the low-angle jointer post your opinions, as the low vs standard angle debate comes up often on Maestronet. Personally I'm in the standard angle camp and think the low angle planes are geared more towards furniture makers and those with tool fetishes.

I don't have much use for low-angle planes, either. They're great on endgrain, but on sidegrain they can tear things up in a way that's not good. I do use one modern block plane lei is a Lie neilsen with a normal lie nielsen jointer plane review result. I havent had any luck using other people low angle planes and dont see any advantage at all in them, in fact they are more of a hinderance. What i would recommend for a modern plane is a Calvert Stevens with a York pitch frog if you can get one,i think Lee nielsen do them as well.

I find the high angle excellent on maple of all figures and probably so does anyone else who uses a Spiers, Norris, Mathieson, etc I don't like the standard bench planes with the exception of teview few expensive ones like Norris for the following reasons: 1.

If I make a heavier cut, that darn thing moves. The adjustment mechanism is jointed designed and poorly made and too much backlash. I use a Lee Valley Veritas low angle jack with 2 extra blades, 38 and 50 degrees bevels. The 50 degrees blade outperforms the high angle 60 wooden plane I have on revirw wood.

The adjustment mechanism is precise and never had chattering problem. Veritas also has redult low angle jointer. I don't make cello, the jack plane is big enough resupt me. From Licastro's posts, I saw manfio also had a Lie Nielsen low angle jack. Perhaps he could tell us his experience with his "queen joniter tools". Veritas low angle jack is 15" long. Blades with 38 and 50 degrees bevel angles are available. I use a well tuned power jointer for planing and jointing; it's quick and won't tear in flamed maple.

Michael, I think Veritas jointer is lie nielsen jointer plane review result good. I have tried it in the store here. The blade with 25 degrees bevel works very good for planing edges for jointing. As I mentioned before, 2 other blades are also available, but you probably won't need them.

Hi David Tseng! Yes, I have one Lie Nielsen low angle jack plane. I like it to work with the neck block, lie nielsen jointer plane review result to make the plates true after joining the lower partbut I would live perfectly without it. I'm lei NewNewbie lif, althought it may sound strange, I love making all my plane jobs with a Record no. The extra weight and and the long and large base gives lots of stability. Lie nielsen jointer plane review result low angle jointer is still quite new and not many people have ever used it.

I can assure you once you use it, you will not go back to York pitch planes. I am also building a new workshop. I got rid of all the hated low quality bench planes.

Veritas has a Norris type of adjuster, adjustable mouth opening, 2 set screws on each side to fix the eeview, the body is ductile iron and will not crack or change shape. The immitation Strad label is the shop sign at the entrance of the long drive way. The shop is surrounded by forest at a pristine lake.

Poor Stradivari probably didn't have any of these. It's amazing he could make a violin at all! Strad did have simpler and better tools, just give lie nielsen jointer plane review result an example, jointef finger plane. In modern finger planes, as the size goes down, every thing becomes small and there is no adequate room to hold it.

Take a look at the kointer in Cremona museum, even for the joknter blade, the sides are quite high. It is much more comfortable to hold it and to use it. The wheel is already there and Plahe do not need to re-invent it. I have no choice but to make my own finger planes. I reciew reading perhaps in an article by Roger Hargrave in the DG book that there is a possibility that lie nielsen jointer plane review result joints were made by professional joiners.

DarylG Posted August 5, Hi Michael, I haven't tried it but I can't revieww any advantages over a good standard jointer for violinmaking duties.

Michael Darnton Posted August 5, I prefer and use older planes with a York pitch, sort of the opposite end of the low angle. Or if you like the old style one of Daryl Hutchinsons if you want to splash out. NewNewbie Posted August 5, lie nielsen jointer plane review result I have seen Lie-Nielsen niepsen demonstrated at woodworking shows.

They are truly the top of there field! The demonstration involved taking paper thin shavings from birds-eye nieleen. A Canadian named Rob Cosman demonstrated these, and I asked him about getting the 7 Bench plane for doing joints on cellos. He said get the 8 Bench plane since it is much more massive. Lie nielsen jointer plane review result currently own lie nielsen jointer plane review result 5 Paragon Bench plane and a lie nielsen jointer plane review result Stanley Bench plane.

I can joint violin plates with the 5, but I find the 7 does violin plates much more easily. The issue resulh me is versatility, since I do other planing jobs, the 7 Low Angle Block plane will perform many different jobs if you get many blades and sharpen them differently.

If you wanted to tighten up the mouth on this plane you would have to shim it, since the mouth is not adjustable. I like the option of playing with the blade angles, BUT I find it hard to see a use for a resul angle of attack in a large jointer situation.

One of my next purchases will be the 8 Bench plane with the new chipbreaker. Before making the final plunge I would email either Rob Cosman in Canada or Thomas Lie-Nielsen, and ask them what would be their suggestion. I have dealt with both of them and I find them very open and helpful.

I have never regretted owning any Lie-Nielsen tool. David Tseng Posted August 5, NewNewbie Posted August 6, Posted August 6, David Tseng Posted August 6, Thank lie nielsen jointer plane review result all.

How about this? David Tseng Posted August resuly, Posted August 7, Melvin Goldsmith Posted August 7, Hi Obligato, What do you normally use? It seems people here have success with a wide variety of planes. I am with Fiddlecollector in that we use old English planes with York pitch and are very happy. Any more workshop pics? Michael Darnton Posted August 7, Yes Michael, and the poor Antonio was not a member of the Catgut Association too!!!

Nov 13,  · I recently had the pleasure of testing the Lie-Nielsen #7 Jointer plane at my local Woodcraft. Although I was intending to purchase the #8, they didn’t have it in the store. I ordered the #8 because I tend to like the feel of the heaver planes. However, I would like to hear opinions from those who have used both the LN #7 and #8 Jointer planes. Oct 01,  · This month, moving somewhat incrementally up the bench plane scale relative to my previous bench plane article, we’ll talk about the Lie-Nielsen No. 6 Fore www.- though it’s somewhat obvious that this is the next larger plane, compared to the article on the No. 5 (in the standard 1 – 8 nomenclature), personally I find the changes feel more significant than many of the earlier.
