This Japanese hand saw has a kerf of only.5mm and a inch blade, making it a great choice for cross cutting large pieces of lumber or performing accurate detail work. The teeth are impulse hardened for improved sharpness, and the handle uses a traditional rattan wrapping for improved grip and comfort.  Arguably the best Japanese pull saw for precision dovetail work, this dozuki has an incredibly thin kerf. The handle is wrapped in traditional rattan, making for a surprisingly comfortable grip. Additionally, the teeth are heat treated to retain their sharpness longer.  The key feature of this saw is also its main weak point. Several users have complained that the handle becomes loose after several uses, resulting in problems retaining the blade. Japanese saws fall into three broad categories. Dozuki (back saws) have very fine blades and are primarily for precision work. Ryoba (double edged saws) have different tooth patterns on either side of the blade, usually Japanese Hand Saws Nz 100 one for ripping and the other for crosscutting.  Japanese saws fall into three broad categories. Kataba (backless saws) are for deeper cuts, beams, panels etc. Japanese saws cut on the pull stroke, so that the sawing action holds the blade in tension as you cut. Using A Japanese Saw. Now, as many of you will know, Japanese woodworking is a bit backwards compared to what we are used to. They pull when we push.  A big box hardware dovetail saw that came too dull and with too thick a blade to really be used for dovetails and I think I’ve finished one cut with it ever (should probably bin it), green wood bow saw, and big box mitrebox and saw. Also have a Miller Falls mitre box with Disston back saw that I’d only pull out for really long and thick stack (e.g. 2×4’s).  I think the key thing to remember is that the pull saw will follow the path of least resistance. If you start with a nice kerf, it will just keep going back to that. I get very accurate cuts now and have ripped longer pieces using a rip Kataba (single edge) and it works beautifully.

A student let me try out this Japanese-made butt-locking bevel gauge (pictured above) and I liked it. It held really tightly, and it runs about $25, which is a good . Hand planes are the living link between woodworking hands and the wood they work on, bonding the craftsman to the craft. Hand planing wood, working with a fine hand plane is one of the most pleasant of all woodworking tasks. Carving tools from Swiss maker Pfeil are a key part of our range of woodcarving tools and sharpening products.
