Solid eucalyptus wood is impregnated with a resin that can make finishing complicated if it is not removed.
This resin, or "pitch," is so prevalent that it can even interfere with wood glue, creating a layer that prevents glue or any finishing product from penetrating into the wood. Before any finishing is done, and even before gluing pieces of eucalyptus together, first wipe the wood down with a soft cloth dampened with acetone.
Wait until the acetone evaporates from the surface of the wood, wait 15 minutes and wipe it again. Examine the closely to make sure all the resin is gone. If the resin persists, you can see small pockets of it on the surface. The resin problem only applies to eucalyptus solids.
Eucalyptus plywood has no resin and can glued and finished just as you would any other plywood. Since eucalyptus is commonly used for exterior items, such as doors and truck beds, a penetrating oil is a good choice for finishing. Liberally wipe the eucalyptus down with linseed oil, tung oil or Danish oil. Let the oil remain on the surface of the wood and then wipe it off again.
Repeat once a week for two weeks and then once every month for three months. After that, apply a coat of penetrating oil to the surface of the eucalyptus once every six months to give it permanent protection against moisture. Eucalyptus is prized for its straight grain, strength and stable qualities. For this reason, it is often used for tongue-and-groove flooring.
Water-based urethane is the best finish for eucalyptus wood flooring. It is more expensive that oil-based urethane, but it dries in about three hours as opposed to the eight hours that the oil-based one takes to dry properly.
