However, there are a few additional factors that we think are worth checking out. For example, you should opt for an electrostatic outer filter as it is capable of attracting more particles through electronic charges. Also, choose an internal filter with multiple pockets, which minimizes the need to clean it on a regular basis. The best woodshop air filtration system should have a diffuser and a movable exhaust as well. Motors with this range of horsepower can function safely with a amp circuit breaker, which is the standard for most home electronics system. Also, make sure to choose a filter that provides a motor with an overload protection. Another factor to consider about the motor is its RPM. The fan is responsible for sucking the polluted air inside the device through the filters and then pushing out the purified output.

Thus, a motor with a high RPM means faster airflow. We recommend choosing a filter that offers a range of RPM e. This way you can adjust the speed of the airflow in accordance with the demand of the situation.

Generally, woodshops are situated in marketplaces or a residential area rather than in an industrial sector. Therefore, a loud air filter can become a cause for concern. Specifically, if you work from home then a loud filter may cause a bit of domestic irritation and neighbor complaints. So, for home workshops, we recommend choosing a filter with a maximum noise level of 25 to dB.

For a marketplace woodshop, you can get away with a noise level of 40 to dB. However, for industrial use, you may need to go up to dB as industrial filters generate a massive amount up to CFM and speed up to RPM of airflow.

If you intend to set the filter at your ceiling, then make sure it comes with sturdy eyebolts or mounting hooks on the top surface.

Needing some kind of dust control for the workshop I put together a basic air filter using a cheap fan and a couple of air filters. The fan came from a cheap Argos pedestal fan.

The fan blade sits quite some distance away from the motor body so I shortened the length of the shaft by moving the rotor down and trimming off the excess shaft. The fan was then mounted onto two pieces of wood, this was done using the original mounting points that attached the motor body to its plastic housing. The enclosure is a simple frame made from thin plywood, the corners are reinforced with some wooden blocks and everything is glued together. The original fan grill was attached over a hole in the front, this was done by drilling holes in the metal frame and attaching it with some wood screws.

For the air filter I am using a commercial unit for a JET air filter. The design is setup to accomodate one or two filters depending on what's needed. If only one filter is in place some wooden spacers fit in the sides. The finished air filter works well and don't cost much or take much time to build. It still needs to be mounted but should be a cost effective solution for reducing dust in the workshop. For more details check out the build video , the blog post or the inspiration behind it.

Reply 4 years ago. Indeed, unfortunitly box fans don't seem to be a thing in the UK or at least no where near as common as other types. I am basically doing the same thing but with a squirrel cage fan taken from an older central air conditioning system. And I as well am using air conditioning filters to help keep the shop air filtered.
