The Square Peg Woodworking 7th first one was for a friend, this one is for myself, so I modified it. For my family, a lid worked out better. The dimensions are the same. I did modify the steps on assembly for both of the racks I made. Instead of using screws from the side, I used pocket screws so I could hide them.

On the first rack I used pocket hole plugs to hide all the work, on mine, I left them. It was cheap, and is pretty sturdy for hanging the rack along with the mugs. They actually work really well, and feel secure. I only dipped half of the S Hook to ensure it slid nice on the wood Square Peg Woodworking 100 rod. The first one I made was a cherry finish, and the rack shown with the lid is golden oak stain.

With some wood grain filler and Armor All finish the mug rack is complete. I have three dogs, Romeo, Robin Hood, and Duchess. For some reason Robin Hood kept Square Peg Woodworking Jobs trying to flip over one bowl he only eats out of the one bowl , push the food out, and move it all over the place. I think he just wanted fresh food. Any rate, it was annoying. I went through some scrap wood I had, and found enough pieces to make this dish holder. I got this old scroll saw at an estate auction, and have been looking for a good project to use it on.

I only drilled about ten holes for each circle to help with the cutting, and to feed the blade for the scroll saw through. One thing I learned, is I kinda suck at using the scroll saw. Fortunately I had a lot of room for error, and I pushed that room to the edge. As you can see below, the cuts got a bit away from me, but that is part of the learning.

I used my old drill press with a sander to smooth out the cuts and make it look a little nicer. The finished product I think looks really nice. I stained it, used wood grain filled, and Armor All to seal and protect it.

There are some rubber feet on the bottom to keep from scratching the floor, and give it some stability. Between the bowls is a nasty knot, that would have come out while cutting, and was really rough. To secure the knot, fill it, and smooth it out, I used Gorilla wood glue on the bottom to secure and seal it a bit.

Once that was dry I used the Gorilla clear super glue on the top. It took three applications to let the glue sink in, and fill the know, before it created a kind of poor mans epoxy. The dish holder is a success. Robin Hood can no longer flip or move the dish around, and the food is contained. So I have two happy dogs, and one aggravated dog. Two out of three satisfied customers. I have been wanting to get a CNC Machine. I figured it would be fun to engrave pens and other wood projects, like the ones you see.

I also wanted to try out some different turning techniques that are needed with the eyeglass holder and the pill box. The Snoopy engraved item is an eyeglass holder, and the University of Michigan is a pill box.

These are a bit different to turn, and fast and easy to do. I was nervous about doing them because the wood is only held on by double stick tape. I have never had much luck with tape in general, but I have to admit, once I figured out how to get it stick it sticks.

The thing I kept doing wrong, was not applying enough pressure. I found that clamping the wood to the mandrel, with the tape between, and letting is sit for a few minutes really made a difference. It really helps to have a band saw, or scroll saw to cut out a rough circle first. Having to round the wood on the lathe with the corners caused it to fly off a few times. Once it is rounded, and on the lathe, it is just a matter of rounding it to the size of the mandrel, and rounding over the face to the desired thickness, and sanding.

I made some blanks so I could make sure the size was right on the picture, and then engraved the blank I made once everything was sized and centered the way I needed it. I used the double stick tape to hold the blank to the engraver bed.

It is purple heart, and wanted to watch it change colors in sunlight. The pill box is made from a whiskey barrel slat, and I finished with some woodgrain filler and Armor All. I used Gorilla Glue to attach the blanks to the blanks, and it is holding great. A note on the pill box finish is that it is holding up nice in her purse. I found out about the Armor All finish from Woodcraft. At Woodcraft they said to try the Armor All, and I am very happy with the durability.

I have been using it lately on all my projects, big and small. Of course with good there is bad. The bad with the Armor All is the time it takes to apply. Normally other finishes take a few hours between coats. The Armor All takes a day between coats, and I have been putting the recommended three coats on. So I am a bit laid up, and not supposed to stand or walk too much.

I have Achilles Tendonitis. After barely being able to walk, doctor gave me some anti-inflammatories, and told me to take it easy. No running, 5ks, walking or standing a lot.

The week of Christmas I was finally able to finish and install the last piece of the train table, a bridge. There is a top that I need to build for when the table is folded up. That way it can be used as a desk. The shelves are adjustable so I can fit bigger trucks on them that he has. The top is some left over MDF, that by some luck was the perfect width for this.

The case took longer since staining takes longer than spray painting, and the shelving had more pieces than the two of the highway. Where I am going with all of this is: I have a highway. I have a train table. Lets connect them.

Of course why not, simple things are not fun. My son had to have crossing gates for the train track. Part of the design was to allow the gates and the bracing to line up.

That is why the bracing is painted black. Because of the height difference, a straight piece of wood would not work so well. On the train table there is simple sliding bolt lock to hold the highway bridge. That way my son can easily raise and lower the bridge, just by sliding the lock back and forth.

Thus ends the tale of the train table. Until some time in the distance future I can get it put away and make the folding top. Not holding my breath on that one. I was asked to make a couple of cedar boxes. Trying to get the cedar wood was way more of an adventure than I thought it would be. I started at Woodcraft, but the quality and width of the wood did not suit my needs. Not very good quality. Finally I went to Home Depot.

By complete luck I saw some decent cedar on the clearance cart. I looked around and found the source.
