While I make quite a bit of dust by hand mostly over my down draft sanding table, but not always the big culprits are power sanders. My spindle sander has good dust collection, so does the thickness sander, but the stationary belt sander is a little more messy.

The overhead air filter goes on before, during and after it's use. I roll the dust collector to the bandsaw any time I'll be resawing, but I often do small amounts of cutting there without using the dust collector. John, I use my dust collector and my shop vac on my stationary sander. Still gets stuff everywhere but not as much. For the first couple of runs when you need it, keep the windows open and blast it. Use the incoming air not the in cabin air at first. If you run it for awhile the smell will go away. Later you can switch to just recirculating the in cabin air.
