These workbenches were made % from pallet wood. The Best Wood For Workbench Top tops are 36″ x 40″ x 2″ thick, all laminated from pallet slats. The main frame is fabricated from ″ x ″ pallet timbers and ″ thick pallet slats, all from a super heavy duty pallet. The casters are locking 4″ casters.  The top includes poplar, pine, white oak, red oak, maple, and cherry! I haven’t yet decided on a finish for the workbench, but right now I think I’m going to put a really thin coat of epoxy to seal and protect the top. Many more modifications will be made to this in the future, including a bench vice, storage underneath, and I’m sure many other things. Nov 09,  · SYP is a nice hard pine, however poplar is a much better furniture wood in general. Since you seem to have thick (8/4), if you are making the bench with it, poplar, I would save that for projects like the chair or computer desk. The xtra weight of SYP will also be better in the workbench than the chest of drawers. It is easy to work but also dings relatively easy. It makes a nice work bench because it won’t damage your work as easily as harder woods.
