The blade is heat-treated via a Cryogenic hardening process which is considered by many as the most advanced hardening process out there.

A year before the Narex box arrived I have learned that the company was intending to release a special line of high-quality bench chisels to celebrate their centennial anniversary. By incorporating the Cryogenic heat-treating process these chisels were destined to have a higher quality of hardening that would render them with an exceptionally tough and long-lasting edge.

They were intended to have a new and comfortable handle design that included a stainless steel ferrule and a leather shock-absorbing washer over the bolster. So when I learned that the new Richter line was finally out I emailed him and he in return sent me three chisels for review. The feel, look, and finish of the chisel is impressive. The metal is mirror polished, the back is flat and the edges of the side bevels along the length of the blade are kept at a minimum.

This feature which I mentioned before is critical for enabling the chisel to excel in tight corners. The Richter chisel has a flat and smooth back. A leather washer is inserted over the tang and is heeled against the bolster to provide some cushioning.

When you settle on a style of carving that you would like to do, that should point out tools that you need to begin with. I won't buy a set for tools that I'll never need. I'd rather spend that money to buy a gouge or two, postage and all, to get exactly whay I need.

What's in the small variety Narex set? I seem to recall it was a reasonable set of sweeps and sizes. That alone should tell you if more of those, one at a time, is the direction to go. OK so the box arrives full. When you buy others, where will you keep those? I have tool rolls made from the legs of old denim blue jeans. Whether the edges arrive "carving sharp" or not, you are going to have to learn to maintain those edges. That means sharpening supplies and learning a method.

There are several, they all work well. Even good Pfeil gouges, I can feel the edge going away after 30 minutes of steady carving. Hone 5 strokes and all is well again. Good point, RV.

One I was after is not very expensive, but it has a skew chisel in it. The rest are gouges in the set. I have those gouges in Flexcut set, so I do not need them. The style of carving I am going to learn is more detailed and realistic carvings like those from the Japanese wood carving buddahs.

When I was watching these carvers in Japan, they seem using large skew type chisels most of the time, and yet, they seem produce real fine details. You are right about the maintaining the tools - whatever and how good tool they are, they do lose the biting sharpness through heavy usage, and need honing or stropping to get the sharpness back.

I am conscious of that, and trying not to have too many tools around me. Ideally if I could learn how to use a knife or two properly, maybe I do not need all these expensive gouges and chisels, but that would be quite challenging aspect of this hobby.

I read somewhere those expensive micro gouges and chisels are not necessarily because they are good, but because it was more difficult to make. Work with all the tools for the repetitive marks they make. Sustain their edges. Don't fall in love with any of it.

In my shop, I would not expect you to really carve anything. Doodle, for lack of a better word. I'll never be more than a beginner with the elbow adze and D adze used by native carvers here in the Pacific Northwest. Some days, all I do is reduce a 24" x 4" x 1" stick of western red cedar to chips. Sweep those into a corner and do a little honing and quit. I've got no objection to found wood at all, did plenty of that in logging debris piles before I ran into a lot that was dirty.

If that continues to be your chosen wood, so be it. If you like the style and the results, keep at it.
