Hello Mike, I realize this thread is a few months old now, but some comments Regarding Waterlox UTOS, it is not waterlox universal sealer standalone finish unless you go in with the understanding it is not waterproof. Needs to be followed up with successive coats of Waterlox original products, Hlox, or perhaps another top coat of choice. It mainly seems to be targeted as a lower VOC option with more consistent penetration as a first coat, and faster cure.

I sometimes use one coat of Waterlox original to provide a little more grain pop, depth and color, and to seal the fibers before applying water based products. I also achieve something similar with dewaxed shellac more affordablejust depends on how rich a base color I want to start with.

Anyways, UTOS now provides another option that's faster drying than the "original", potentially requires less product per application, no waterlox universal sealer since you buff in, and lower VOC.
