You're better off. Home Depot killed some local places that had excellent lumber and such. The HD is more geared toward building houses and redecorating. All they sell is disappointment when it comes to materials. That's all true - they are pretty easy to make, the measurements for everything are out there - I think though, that by the time you made the kreg jig and the other parts that make it perfect you will have spent more on materials and time than it would have cost to make it.
