Until I get a spherical head jointer, this will be my method for the forseeable future. The sides werent square, the sole was wavy, and the blade would shift no matter what I did assuming the frog didn't hold down tight enough.

This grizzly was leaps and bounds better. Stuff reminded me of cosmoline we used in the navy No reason why it wouldn't work. The big ones can be a swine to tune if the sole is out of true but it could be returned just the same as any other plane if it was. Glad it worked out and you got good results. I can also identify with how poor the current line of Stanley Bailey planes are, very poor. Glad it worked out and your got good results. Seems to be an unsung hero by my accounts, but i'd hate for someone to buy it and be like " what the hell man". There are relatively few things that can go wrong with a plane. The thing is that when they go wrong it's no fun at all. I'd bet that there are many good users among sketchy brands and a few lemons among the best.

Thanks Bob. I think the current Bailey range from Stanley is dreadful value for money. Hollow plastic handles I don't mind plastic but the thin hollow stuff is bad and very poor finish for the money. I think the Grizzly looks much better but clearly wont have the quality control of our friends at LN etc and is a bit of a gamble.

In an ideal world I'd like to pick up cheaper ones in a store and check it Grizzly Jointer Plane Review 51 over as although it can be sent back it's a bit of a pain to do so. I believe the preferred term is "content creator".

And guess what, I have had this same experience with this plane, except that I haven't even installed the higher quality blade yet.

This plane works very well and was accurate right out of the box. The picture in their catalog shows a lever style blade release but mine came with a knob that you screw on and off and I actually like this better. It seems more solid and you can cinch it down tighter. Maybe we are all just being conned into buying these very expensive planes.
