I've been power carving for 16 years now and Tupelo is nice. It holds fine detail carvign fear of mashing it down by handling it while you finish carving.

It doesn't fuzz up as much as basswood. It's not cheap though. And if you get a piece of it from the wrong part of the tree, it doesn't carve well.

I was always told that the best part of the tree is from the gest level it grows in the swamps of Southern USA to six feet up I have gotten hold of some really rock hard tupelo and wondered if it came from too high up on the tree.

Basswood is good but you have to work harder to finish it because it fuzzes when power carved. Jelutong is nice when you can find it. It's actually Malaysian rubber tree and when the trees in the plantations, quit producing sap, they're cut and sold for lumber. Jelutong was always popular with pattern makers.

It is soft though and you can mash the fine detail by over carrving it. It carves well with power or gouges. Unfortunately, it's tough to find these days.
