One of the things I like best about woodworkers is that we are always thinking. For example, if we do not have a tool or a jig that we need to do something, we make it ourselves, or come up with a work around. Here is an example I have accumulated quite a pile of pipe clamps, but never found a convenient way to store them.

Recently some left over PVC plumbing pipe gave me an idea. The snap-in pipe clamp rack you see in the photo is the result of this inspiration. I got tired of finding my band clamps all balled up in a drawer, so I devised these ultra-simple holders to keep them in order. Whenever I use pipe clamps, I like to place a block of wood between the clamp and my workpiece.

This clamping pad helps prevent damaging the surface of the wood. The problem is trying to hold the block in place as you tighten the clamp. When edge gluing boards, I use scrap blocks to distribute the clamping pressure and avoid marring the edges. But sometimes the blocks shift out of position or fall to the floor before I get the clamps tightened.

To solve this problem, I made a number of U-shaped clamp blocks that slip over the edge and stay right where I put them. I often use a C-clamp when setting up a tool. But sometimes the sliding bar, used to tighten the clamp, gets in the way.

Here is a solution. Occasionally, I will need to sand a small wooden part on a drum or disk sander. But holding onto small parts can be a challenge. A pair of pliers could do the job, but I wanted something with a softer grip.

So I came up with the small parts clamp shown in the photo. When gluing up panels, I like to remove the glue squeeze-out before it sets. But pipe clamps laid flat on my assembly bench left me no room to clean the underside of the joints. So I found a way to take my panel-making to a higher level. I have found that gluing and clamping small assemblies requires a slightly different approach. Sawhorses or a large open benchtop just are not suited to the task.

So I came up with a work surface that matches the small scale of the project. The basic construction is simple and consists of only three pieces of scrap wood, glue, a few screws and a ratchet tie down which you can get at any hardware store.

You can easily build a clamp out of a few scrap pieces of wood and this clamp can be adjusted. If you do not have a dedicated veneer press, you can still get the job done with common clamps, cauls, and wooden beams, as long as you use enough clamps for adequate pressure and distribute the clamping pressure as evenly as possible.
