My contractor told me that I'm required by code to have a smitty pan aka drain pan under the washer, so we placed one there. After the installers left, I realized that I cannot open the pedestal drawer under the washer; it is blocked by the lip of the drain pan. Also, the washer rocks and vibrates even more than my previous LG washer.

The installation instructions suggest that a drain pan can increase vibration. I've not been able to validate that the drip pan is required by code.

I've asked my GC to check on the city code. I'm tempted to have the pan removed after code inspection. We need a class action law suit against these leaking lg washers its crazy that sooooo many leak I am ready to just sell mine and get one that does not have a drain in the front very disappointed at lg.

I have no comment on the drain pan but I 2nd the battery operated water sensor. I would not be without one after an expensive dishwasher leak. Have one under every appliance with water including the water heater. I think it's a ridiculous rule to begin with. Should be an option not a rule. My experience with them is the washer is fine, but the dryer is marginally usable. The dryer capacity is quite limited and not very energy efficient either. It would be fine if you normally used a clothesline but wanted a backup for occasional use A wash and dry cycle probably takes about 4 hours in a combo machine--and you would need lots of loads if you have much laundry to do. If you are interested in putting in a washer and dryer under the counter, you need to get the appliance specs before moving the water, drain and vent as each unit has the connections in different places.

You can get rigid dryer vent piping because it is an absolute pain to try to connect flexible venting and then slide the dryer back into place without crimping or disconnecting the vent while moving the unit into place.

That may be doable from the top, but you'll have to have access without the countertop in place - as well as making friends with your favorite neighborhood basketball player to find someone able to reach down far enough. Or, consider putting the cabinet next to the dryer on hidden wheels so you can slide it out like a fridge to access the back of the laundry units.

I contemplated getting an all one but didn't for two reasons. You have to wait for the drying to finish before starting a wash load whereas with separate your next load could be starting while one finishing drying. I also thought an all in one might be more expensive to fix because it is a specialty appliance.

In the past I did have a standalone dryer with a regular plug. Even light garments took a long time. Not sure how much power that used as it was just regular current, not the ; long time vs more current Maybe an electrical person could figure the price comparison. We didn't have to bracket to the wall, but if meant to be stacked, either comes with or need to purchase a stacking kit to stabilize.
