The door needed a little bit of sanding and jiggling to get it to fit properly. The holes for the magnets needed to be enlarged slightly as they were 8mm holes and the magnets were also 8mm magnets that I got on Amazon. But after all adjustments the door operated fine as you can see in the video.

I did add one rubber oring to the inside centre of the door held on with duct tape just to take up a small amount of play that existed when I first assembled it.

More accurate locating of all the parts and blocks would probably have made this unnecessary. My friend added two labels above the sockets to make them look like UPS power supplies for the computer server equipment that he plans to install on the bottom shelf.

I will probably have to add some cooling fans and power to the cupboard for that later. The spare old shelf was kept at the top of the cupboard as it needed an extra shelf. So that's it. I'm sure these magnet type locks can be used in lots of different ways on different projects. Just a word of caution. The magnets are small but very strong so don't let them jump together because they chip easily and can pinch skin and fingers as well.

Comments and suggestions for improvements welcome! Question 1 year ago on Step 5. Answer 1 year ago. I stuck them onto the bottom of a metal key cabinet that's on the wall next to the cupboard. Not sure if my buddy will leave them there or put them somewhere else but I think they can be stuck to anything metal nearby. They don't look like keys so I don't think anyone would ever guess what they are for if they saw them nearby.

Reply 1 year ago. If I lived in a mansion I'm sure I would install a few secret doors. The kids would love it if nothing else! Brilliant Job you get my vote, but I would have used an extension lead and rewired the boxes as a prospective thief would expect to see a cable leaving cupboard if there were sockets.

Again though brilliant job. Yep definitely need to add a cable going to the cupboard to make it believable. It would be even nicer if the sockets worked as well. I might do that as an upgrade to my cupboard upgrade.

I really like this idea and have been wanting to build a full hidden closet with a magnetic related lock, and this is a cheap and easy way to do that without the expense of a more elaborate magnetic lock. Those locks can be quiet pricey and are not always stealthy either. Since this one is hidden, the magnet and lock strength is not as important as stealth really. One small suggestion that would allow you to use this locking technique from both above as done here, or also from below, would be to add a small spring.

The spring would need to be light enough to pull the locking magnet out, yet strong enough to push the locking magnet back in place when the key magnet is removed. The gravity works from the top down, but a spring would allow it to work from bottom up as well. In fact, the spring might make the top down locking magnet easier to reset without the need to flip the key magnet to push the locking magnet back down and into place again.

Using a spring might also allow you to use a non magnetized metal cylinder for the locking mechanism rather than another magnet. You could really beef up the locking mechanism this way if you wanted to do so.

Great idea and and it gives me additional ideas on how to modify this for a completely hidden and secure closet. Today, the company has created about 1, passageway systems all over the world with clients ranging from business executives to celebrities to government officials to professional athletes.

There are definitely no worries about security, especially because every door style is different from all the others they have built.

The unique design is particular to each client. We have a variety of door entry systems, including mirror doors, sliding, single, or double bookcase doors, wainscot doors, stone doors, and pool cue doors. We also use a digital access control system for their designs, including the ones for a rotating fireplace and other styles. Every step is crucial in building a hidden passageways, but one of the most important is the fabrication process. After the clients have approved of the drawings from the design team of our company, production can be initiated.

All the pieces of lumber are handpicked by professional carpenters to make sure only the best wood is utilized. Because of our focus on discreet security, our secret doors would not be complete without a door lock.

Different product styles have different types. Our standard doors have single bolt locks, while our typical custom projects have electromagnetic locks. Higher security doors will provide duplicate security with the use of multi-point steel bolts. The Benefits and Functionality of a Magnetic Door Lock Our most popular lock type for our custom projects is a magnetic lock. Also known as electromagnetic locks or maglocks, these locking devices are designed using electromagnetism.

When they are installed on door access control systems, they provide a strong level of security for property inside. Maglocks have two main parts: the first one is an electromagnet and the second is an armature plate.

When it comes to sophisticated locks, there are both fail-safe type which remain unlocked when de-energized and fail-secure type which stay locked even during a power failure. Since maglocks are powered by electricity, they are fail-safe, which means safe egress is possible even during power failure. However, for those that would prefer the security offered by a fail-secure feature, an access control system can simply be connected to a battery backup.

There are many advantages to maglocks. These locks are awkward to tamper with, meaning they are less vulnerable to manipulation than traditional locks. Since we often build builds passageways, vaults, and other secret rooms, we need a strong and robust device — maglocks are difficult to break. Maglock are sturdy, thanks to their epoxy potting compound, and have extended lifetimes.

The drawer is barely visible from the top and because of its hidden magnetic lock, appears to be part of the table itself. This Instructable shows you how to make the drawer along with the locking mechanism. If you already have a drawer, you can skip ahead to step 7 for the lock. I suggest you read through the instructable before you begin to see what is expected and get a better understanding of the project.

There are many possible variations and sizes you can apply to carry different items or loads. You can also use a variety of locks, some of which I will explain here. I hope the instructions are simple and easy to understand. Enjoy and have fun. These are the materials required for the project.

In this project I used old and damaged offcuts from previous projects so please bear with the defects : Keep in mind some of the sizes and quantities may vary depending on your choice of materials:. Before you start with a task, you should always have a solid plan and understanding of the project. For this particular project you need to be fully aware of the dimension, sizes and restrictions that could effect the outcome.

Draw out a plan to provide you with all the specifications. These are some of the points you may need to consider for this project: - For my table I had to make sure that I didn't drill into the other side drawers which could prevent them from opening. You could either paint it, plaster it or use matching wood. I plastered mine. Keep it away from magnetic materials that could effect its motion or devices that could get damaged.

Usually they are placed on the sides but I decided to attach them to the top. This is because I will not be storing heavy items. This also allowed me to place the locking mechanism facing the side wood.

The top wood of my table surface was also much thicker and stronger than the sides. Take the dimensions of the railings as well when planning. Once you have the plans sorted and materials gathered, it's time to measure your desk and make the relevant markings as guidance. My drawer is designed to carry my laptop and other small items. Therefore the measurements I take will be centered around my particular use for the drawer. Measure the area under your table and record the dimensions.

The desk space I will be using is mm X mm. Therefore I will use full ext BB runner mm sliding rails which gives the drawer enough room to stay hidden. Now make the markings on the wood. You will need 2 side boards; 1 base board; 1 backboard and 1 front board. Make sure you take the thickness of the wood and rails into consideration as this will affect the dimensions. Now that we have marked the wood, cut the relevant sizes. Remember to make space for the rails to slide through like in image 3.

Once the wood is cut, you can sand all the edges and faces. Once you have cut the wood dimensions necessary for the drawer, it's time to assemble all the pieces together. Add the wood glue around the sides where the wooden pieces will be connected. Place the 2 side boards on top of the base and attach them from the bottom using the 6X41 wood screws. When using screws, it is easier to first make a small hole with the drill.

This helps guide the screws through the wood. Once again add wood glue and attach the front and back pieces. Once they are attached you can wipe the extra wood glue with a cloth and leave it to dry. Now it's time to add the sliders. Position the railings on the top side so that they are in line with the side wood. Also take note of which holes you can use on the sliders.

You might have to position the slides in order to reach the holes image 2, 4 and 6. Attach the slides with the 6X41 wood screws. There are a variety of locking systems that you could use. I decided to use a magnetic system because it doesn't require an evident opening or key hole. For my system, you will have a horizontal tube that holds the magnet.

The magnet will have a rod attached that protrudes out past the drawer which will effectively go into the side of the table. Additionally, you could also position the lock so that the rod goes into the side drawers as well allowing you to effectively have a lock for two compartments on the table. I also added a spring to make it automatically lock.

Firstly, cut the tube so that the magnet has enough room to slide back and forth while preventing the rod from exiting the side wood.
