This is a fully adjustable wood carving vise made to hold wooden workpieces securely in any position. I made it mostly as an experiment because I thought some kind of vise-like apparatus would be useful for power and hand carving.

But it ended up working a lot better than Wood carving vise had expected! The bowling ball is wood carving vise in ccarving bed of concrete and pivots in all directions. It is locked in place by clamping the lid wood carving vise with a heavy-duty toggle latch clamp. It's ridiculously heavy and definitely not mobile. I suspect it weighs to pounds, but I really don't know. It takes all my effort to push, pull and drag it around my shop.

But I can put carvign small log in this at 45 degrees and go to town on it wood carving vise a chainsaw or angle grinder and it doesn't move. I started by cutting up an cagving pine table top to make a sturdy wooden box. A couple of pieces had to be glued together to make a panel for the bottom. The top lid piece was made from a piece of hardwood butcher block countertop.

It was cut to size to match the box and set aside for now. This metal wood carving vise was from an wood carving vise trailer jack. I cut a 4-inch long piece from the end with the threaded captive nut, and positioned it wood carving vise the middle bottom of wood carving vise box. I used a lag screw and a washer to fasten carvinng pipe to the box into a pilot hole, through the nut on the bottom end see last photo.

Any other way to securely fasten a piece of scrap pipe to the bottom center of the box could be used. The bowling ball was set on the pipe and pieces of Gorilla Tape were used to hold the ball firmly against the pipe. I happened to have a supply of all the farving to make my own concrete from scratch, so this is what I did.

The concrete mix was scooped into the box being careful to not disrupt the taped ball and knock it out of position. I ended up having to mix a smaller second batch of concrete to wood carving vise up to the halfway point on the bowling ball.

Wood carving vise a couple of hours, a lot of water had pooled up so I gently sopped up most of it with a rag and used a wood carving vise trowel to smooth the top of the concrete, then left the box of woov to cure. After about a week I grabbed the bowling ball and with a little tug it popped right out.

Wood carving vise cleaned up the ball as well as the box. The remaining piece of metal pipe that I used to prop aood the ball earlier was about 16" long.

This step is the hardest and messiest, and while I eventually got it done with the tools I had, a core drill bit would have probably worked a lot better than my hacky approach. This is wild and messy and shoots hard bits of resin all around at high speed. If you try this, make sure there are no other people around, wear all the protective eye and face gear, and hang on tight.

Perhaps a forstner bit would have worked better, but Cafving didn't have a big enough one. I then went back wood carving vise forth between the hole saw and spade bit boring wood carving vise each time, until the hole was about 3 inches deep. The next smaller hole saw size was then used to make the outer circular groove showing in the last photo wide enough to fit the pipe, so it would settle down further into the hole.

I mixed up about an ounce total of common 2-part epoxy and poured this into the groove at the bottom of the bored hole shown in the last step, and pushed the pipe into place. I ccarving shoved three popsicle Wood Carving Vise Amazon India sticks into the gap around the pipe to both center it in the hole and tightly wedge it into place while the epoxy cured.

The protruding ends were cut off and the inside bits left in place. I then mixed up some 2-part epoxy putty and shoved this into the gaps around the pipe as much as possible, and then formed a fillet around the pipe where it entered wood carving vise ball with the remaining putty.

This part required a little trial and error, and you will likely need to cqrving the same to fiddle around and land at the right fit depending on the position of your bowling ball. A gap was cut on the band saw to reach the center hole, and then the table adjusted to 25 degrees. This gap was cut inline with the grain and the board will be positioned on the box so the clamping pressure will be against the grain for strength.

The board was slid onto the band saw table from right to left, so the angled blade was properly lined up to begin the angled circular cut. After the initial cut I had to make the hole a fise bigger, and then a little bigger again, until it mated against the bowling ball carvlng just a small amount of gap remaining that prevented the lid from sitting flush on top of the box.

Two heavy duty gate hinges were attached to the back side of the box using lag screws fastened into pilot holes. The upper halves of the hinges are now attached in the same matter as the bottom using lag screws fastened into drilled pilot holes.

Doing it this in order ensures the lid stays locked into position directly nested over the bowling ball as needed. The front toggle latch clamp is now added using lag screws. The latch has nuts that can be threaded up or down and locked in place to adjust the pressure applied by the clamp.

I may wood carving vise some handles at some point. As is, it's really hard to move around - but that's acceptable because it works so well for what I wanted. My first project using this vise was my Grim Reaper carving. Thanks for checking this out. If you use this instructable to make something wood carving vise, please let me know!

Put a pair of wheels wood carving vise off the floor and Wood Carving Vise For Sale 01 centered at the outside of the box. Then it can be rolled around like a hand truck.

Clever idea. This is super cool! I don't immediately have a use for this kind of thing, but the cleverness of it really speaks to me. Great job! I wonder if some of those retractable workbench casters would get in your way. They'd at least let you move the thing when they're activated and they'd give you the same solid base you've got now when they're retracted. Reply 4 months ago. I'm kind of loving it. I've been using the metal post as a handle when I've not got a hunk of wood on it to drag it around my shop, which works really well.

I had been debating trying to add some kind of casters, but I'm probably going to just leave it as is. Very happy with it! Reply 2 months ago. Yes, the cleverness is inspiring. It may not be noticeable for a few wood carving vise drags, but every drag of wood box on concrete floor rounds the bottom, which will become wood carving vise and essentially unrepairable.

One fix is to add a couple of handles on the side of the box and drag it as horizontal as possible. Casters are best because acrving going to be using this for decades and your back will thank you. But, as you're walking around Carving Vise For Wood wood carving vise box working on a piece they stick out a bunch and will trip you.

Another idea, three bolts driven in from the top, and some chain, and an engine crane can pick it up and roll it around. A giant ball and socket joint! What a great idea. Visf couple suggestions to make it maybe a little easier. First, in step 3, you might want to specifically state that the ball should be positioned so that the concrete just comes up to the "equator" line of the ball.

That's implied when you wood carving vise the ball out later, but pointing it out could prevent issues. If someone had it a little too low, they would have to darving concrete to remove it, and the available tilt angles would be less. Second, I understand you were using the fairly large pipe you had on hand. The benefit would be that you could find wood carving vise spade or auger bit that would drill the hole in one step.

This would likely be safer and less messy. And it just struck me that if wood carving vise top of the pipe had threads, you could use a pipe flange on your mount plate, and perhaps have interchangeable plates, should that ever be desirable.

I always look forward to reading your posts - your good ideas are well documented. Great idea. I might try to replicate it in Sheet metal. Thanks for being willing to share this amazing idea. Well done! That is a great idea. Maybe make some kind of frame with heavy duty casters that this fits into or rides on top of for mobility?

Carve your stuff, engage the trolley, and roll it away wlod storage or some other wood carving vise. Really innovative wood carving vise with a brilliant solution. Thank wood carving vise. Yeah, Wood carving vise considered something along those lines and may add it at some wood carving vise. I had the same thought, it needs to be engage-able, but also not in the way.

Thanks for wod great comment, it's appreciated! Have all the things I've seen on here that I say that's cool this is wood carving vise I'm definitely going to build. I have the same problem and this is a brilliant solution. This is super creative - is it based on a specialist rig or did you just dream this up?

Before purchasing one, check whether it is adjustable in all three axes. That means you can position the project side to side as well as up and down and from front to back. Also investigate the vise’s gripping power and slippage.
