To ensure your guide is centered on the bit, use an alignment pin. Insert it into the router and screw the guide onto the router base. Ensure the guide is centered and tighten the router-base screws. Remove the pin. You can also align by eye. For greater accuracy, keep the same edge of the guide against the template throughout the entire process.

By cutting the shape close to the final size, and then using a template and a router to finish the job you get a consistent, smooth edge, which requires little additional work. To do this, draw your pattern exactly to size.

Decide which straight bit and guide you will use and calculate the offset refer to the table above. If the shape is relatively straight or, at least, free of any sharp curves, cut the pattern to the exact size and simply shift it by the amount of the offset.

If your pattern has deep curves you can use a compass or a pencil and a piece of wood that is the same width as the offset in order to draw the pattern. Keep your pencil perpendicular to the pattern edge at all times. Cut the pattern, sand it smooth and then secure it to the stock with clamps or double-sided tape. When joining boards to make a wider surface, you can add some interest to the final piece by using different woods and by joining them using a wavy shape instead of a straight edge.

Simply make one pattern and then use it to create a mirror image. Use an inlay bushing to ensure perfect alignment.

This will account for the offset; otherwise, you would need to make two separate templates. You can use a guide to rout a cavity or mortise using a simple template.

Establish the required dimensions, draw the shape on your template and then add the offset. Cut the hole in the template and sand the edge smooth. Attach the template to your stock and, using a plunge router, position the guide in the hole.

You are supposed to remove the three screws here, and thread a pivot pin into one of the holes and then attach it to your router and make your cuts.

However, the screws stripped like tissue paper. A little screwdriver plowed through all three of these screws, not one would come loose. So in a way, it almost made a perfect circle, just inside the screws and not in the wood. So, in this regard, wow does it suck. Images in this review. I ordered the item and was presented with a two day delivery as the fastest option, which I accepted. So I cancelled the previous order which hadn't shipped yet and ordered for the item with same day delivery.

Later that evening the package arrived, and I was excited to get it installed and give it a try! However, when I retrieved the box from my front porch, I noticed right away that parts were moving around in the box and clanging together. When I opened the box, what I found was a blister package that had been literally smashed into a box too small for it, ruptured the package and spilled the contents into the box. Fortunately, all of the parts were in the box with the exception of one of the mounting bars - a part I actually didn't need for my equipment.

The overall condition of the item was acceptable otherwise, no dents or scratches. It mounted to my router just fine, and did an average job for what I needed. I will point out that both the threaded mounting bars and the keeper screws will not stay tight unless they are actually torqued-in with some strength. I discovered this as I was making a test cut and found both mounting bars were loose in the router base and allowed the cut to wander out of alignment.

I found a wrench for the bars they have two flattened edges on the end flange for a small wrench or plier and put a strong twist on them which seemed to hold. I did end up adding lock washers hoping to prevent them from loosening, but without them being bolted on the end, they'll probably come loose again.

The unit itself seems fairly well made for the price, but the fine adjustment knob is of little value and I ended up ignoring it.

I do like the sliding adjustment though and locks down very tight. Overall this guide seems better than others and will be fine for limited applications. Rather than recommend buying this, I suggest investing in or making your own router table - something I will do in the very near future! I don't know how I missed the two other reviews and warnings about it not fitting the but when I used the Amazon compatibility checker, it said it worked for the , and the packaging says series routers so I thought I was covered.

So I was really disappointed to find that it does not fit. Normally I wouldn't rate a product for a purpose or model it wasn't intended but in this case, I think it's entirely appropriate. The correct guide, is no longer available from Porter Cable but it would have been so easy to make this model work for the The correct diameter and length rods are included but the edge plate just isn't drilled and tapped for the correct spacing.

If they had just added the holes for the or provided an adapter plate this would be a 5 star product. It looks very solid, easy to adjust, and rugged. I'm not returning this product because I plan on making the adaptations needed to make it fit but what a headache. One person found this helpful. While this same job would have been easier with a router table, I do not have one. This unit has a course adjustment and a fine adjustment, which I guess saves a few seconds in setting up.

Moving this side to side this was not staying aligned at first, so I attached a straight piece to the black edge guide to give it more surface area and make it more solid. Though after attaching a straight piece to the black edge guide I discovered that the edge guide while stiff laterally can be easily bent vertically. This is unfortunate, since the rest of the unit is rather solid.

Though the bending issue is avoidable by simply not resting the router on top of the edge guide. That being said, we needed an edge guide for an older router. This is the top of their line in this department.

While the finish is not exactly what I'm used to when purchasing American made tools, it does work. Just be aware that the edges are not completely deburred from the stamping process when they made this. Other than that, it works. Had the finish been better, I would have given it a higher rating.
