Post a Comment. Guest Post by Jerry K. Speaking from our own experience and according to customer reviews on woodworking forums who worked on the JET JWL for many years this machine is a reliable, quiet and smooth running unit. The JET JWLVS possesses same great quality features and build but with extended capabilities and more power giving this great unit even more flexibility and superb functionality.

The motor performs with consistent RPM, is flexible and can handle various projects of different sizes without slowing down your lathe. Overall Stability, Spindle Lock Convenience A heavy-duty cast-iron lathe bed provides steadiness and solidity whereas significantly reducing vibrations throughout operation ensuring highly accurate final results.

The larger turning capacity and weight as well the additional power are the biggest advantages. However the little things like the tool holder, the additional, larger, tool rest and the attached light are a nice plus. Actually I am glad that I had the first as I pretty much trashed it learning to turn. Now that I better understand how to take care of a lathe I really appreciate the I have turned bowls up to 10" in diameter with no problem, at least no problem with the lathe :- If you have limited space like I do then this is a great unit at a super price.

This is my first lathe, I researched many other lathes and felt this would be the best value for my money. I have now turned about 10 pens and a few bowls and love this machine.

Its quiet and smooth and when spindle speed needs to be changed its a breeze! Overall a great machine thats easy to use, you cant go wrong with a Jet! This is the first lathe I have used. It is heavy and powerful. So far I haven't turned anything very large but it seems to handle all of the small items I have tried with no trouble at all. If there is a negative, it would be the odd latch system for the lower belt housing door which is quite awkward.

There is a spring loaded threaded bolt with a plastic knob that has to be pulled out and upward with one hand while attempting to move the hinged door with a slot in the top where the bolt fits down to access the belt at the lower pulley. I would guess most folks just leave that door open. This bothers my safety bone a little. It seems they should have come up with a simpler door latch system than this.

Once you get the lower door open, changing the speeds by moving the belt is quite simple. I've had a few problems with my lathe so far. Honestly, I believe it might have been my fault but not sure. Anyways, on the tapered insert for the headstock it has a center point and four smaller teeth that grab the wood when you turn the tail stock to tighten the wood onto the lathe. As I was working a piece of apple wood my gouge hit a knot and for an instant the piece stopped then immediately started turning again.

Then when I went to continue working the piece it would easily stop turning. I looked at the head stock and noticed that the four teeth on the taper insert end were all curved over instead of being straight. It looks as though that when the wood was stopped the tapered insert kept moving and this caused the teeth to bend.

So I straightened the teeth. I thought maybe what caused the problem was that the wood wasn't tight enough in the lathe. So I tightened the tail stock down and started to use the adjusting knob to get it tighter. I noticed that the wood was not sinking into the tapered insert on the head stock. After further investigation I noticed the tail stock was actually moving backward on the bed.

I couldn't tighten the tail stock down any more by hand so I used a soft blow hammer to assist me. That seemed to work. So I'm thinking that when I originally tightened the wood onto the lathe I never got the head stock to sink into the wood because the tailstock was actually moving backward instead of pressing the wood into the headstock.

I'll check this every time for now on. Hope this helps. One person found this helpful. Great Lathe. Nice size for bowls and small projects.

Limited on length but has bed extention available. Live center could be better. Would like one with a smaller longer point. Overall, a very nice lathe for the home hobbiest. I love this lathe. Did lots of research before purchasing and watched a lot of videos on woodturning. Kept seeing the jet lathes popping up. Got it in my head that I had to become a turner, thinking pens, ornaments, and small bowls.

The mini would be a little small. Very quiet. Shipping box terrible but inside fine. Had to adjust the nut under the tail stock too but that's no big deal. I never turned anything in my life and turned out a very nice candlestick, a small lidded box, a weed pot and now I finally have everything I need to make the pens. I can't wait! Long story short I would recommend this lathe to every beginning turner. Great lathe, comes fully assembled and arrived ontime.
