My blocks were cut by hand- and it shows! Clamp the screw blocks in the jig and then run the jig over the router bit to cut the slot. After the glue has dried overnight, check that it is square and that the ends are flat.

If not, you can use a bench plane to flatten the ends. The column then rouher glued and screwed to the back center of the 18" x 11" plywood base using 2" long 10 wood screws.
