Jun 12,  · Whereas whittling is specifically the process of holding a piece of wood in your hand and shaping it with a knife, “wood carving” is a more general term. In fact, whittling is a type of wood carving! The umbrella term “wood carving,” however, allows for a much greater variety in techniques, tools, and projects. I'm Brian, and I have enjoyed whittling, wood carving, and stone carving ever since I was a kid. My first foray into carving was similar to most other boys; picking up a stick and cutting shapes into it with my trusty pocket knife! I am always learning new skills, finding cool tools, and trying my hand at new challenging projects. Whittling and wood carving knives are usually made of high carbon steel and is tempered to the right hardness needed to hold a sharp cutting edge when slicing through wood.
