Thankfully, the Rikon sander proved to be a pleasant surprise: it's sturdy, well-made, easy to use, powerful, and it's more than you would expect for that price. It chews through hard woods and aluminum with ease; very little vibration, and the dust collection system is pretty good, too.

My only minor gripe is that it takes some work to change belts: instead of some sort of a latch or a thumb screw, you have to undo three screws with a screwdriver. And if you don't tighten them back, the cover will be prone to coming off when you connect your vacuum cleaner to the port. As other reviewers have noted, there are two separate dust collection outlets.

This complicates things a bit if you're putting together some sort of a permanent dust collection setup. But since I'm just connecting my vac when I need it, it's not a big deal for me. Edit: the sander has gotten increasingly loud after several months of intermittent use, to the point where you had to wear hearing protection just to turn it on. After some investigation, the culprit appear to be two low-quality bearings used for the smaller belt rollers.

The bearings are very cheap to replace, although the middle roller is relatively difficult to disassemble. Overall I recommend this without hesitation. Just received it and am totally impressed. Had bought a Harbor Frieght belt sander a couple years ago. By the time I tried the Harbor one, the motor bogged down with the least bit pressure and could not keep the belt on track.

When I plugged in and turned on this Rikon, I knew that this is one well built sander. The frame is all metal, tracks perfectly, has power to spare and the belt back piece that supports the belt is super strong. Wonderful sander. And it comes with a 5 year warranty.

The unit came defective. The belt could not be adjusted to track correctly and was eating into the housing immediately. It caused the shaft to be skewed and the roll pin to keep the tensioner from working correctly. I could not drive the roll pin in further, so I used needle nose vise grips to pull it out. Now I could see that the hole that was drilled for the roll pin was not straight from one side of the collar to the other collar.

Therefore, the pin could not seat itself in the far hole. The smaller of the two holes holes that actually holds the pin in. If I had attempted to use this unit as it was, the tensioner pulley would have eventually blown out and could have been dangerous.

I decided to attempt to fix it myself instead of sending it back. I removed the roll pin, used a drill bit to lightly straighten out the first hole, and then fitted the roll pin to be sure it would drive in straight when the shaft was inserted back in. I also spread the roll pin out a bit to make it hold better.

The pin was driven completely in afterward. I then noticed a second problem; the tensioner assembly was hanging on the housing, causing it to stick and not fully engage. I worked the tensioner by hand back and forth to wear the tensioner assembly in so it would move freely.

That worked after about 15 minutes of constant work. So far the unit now works well. It tracks the belt fine and holds the proper tension. The comical thing to all of this is the documentation that says that the belt should not need adjusting because it was adjusted at the factory.

That is a joke, as the belt could never have been adjusted. In a nutshell, the build quality is not good. The person drilling holes in the unit and the assembler should have caught this problem.

It was easy to see that the roll pin was sticking up and if the belt had been adjusted, then the person adjusting the unit should have immediately spotted the problem. In regards to the design of the unit, the belt guard is horrible. You need to remove the top clear guard and then three screws to remove the side guard. If you are sharpening knives, you will need to change the belt three times.
