Titebond Liquid Hide Glue is the first hide glue to be offered in a liquid, ready-to-use form.  I have used Titebond liquid hide glue for years making reproduction Windsor chairs, settee and a major reconstruction/conservation of a year-old deacon's bench that was badly deteriorated. This is the only glue that has the characteristics of the original hide glues used then but without the inconvenience of a heated glue pot.  This is what you need for furniture repair. Just what I needed for repairing a cherry table from the mid last century. Many folks don't know what hide glue is when you look for it in the regular world. Seems like they have forgotten what the apprentice's job was. This liquid hide glue has the same hard set and that means that it can be readily scraped, filed and sanded and these methods leave only minimal trace on the wood itself. Nice Just Looking At It.  I have Titebond Liquid Hide Glue Guitar Repair Type used animal glue so far to repair a couple of antique pieces and to build a few shop appliances. As my workshop is unheated and the temperatures dropped again, the open time was variable but that should improve in the next months.  However titebond liquid hide glue which in the bottle is liquid at room temperature is not as good as proper pearl hide glue or the animal glue granuals it is weaker than both of these and I suspect has a lower melting point. where I want to make sure a joint is particularly strong I would use one of the traditional glues and. Jide temporarily shut down again! What I enjoy most is that for smaller glueups, you just hold the pieces together for a minute while the glue cools enough to hold liwuid. It 'cold creeps' almost without limit when subjected to shear loads. Add to Cart Save to Wishlist. At the film thicknesses we're talking about Titebond liquid hide glue guitar repair query not convinced it really matters much anyway. Neck had become loose and once strings were removed, I was able to remove the entire neck without damage. Post Aug 30, 18 T

You know when it dry fits like a piston. Then you smear your generic wood glue on, and need a super sledge to get it together?

It aids the fit of your well-fitting joints. PVAs and the like swell your work, and fast. Then when they dry, they shrink a bit. Which makes through joints somewhat more tricky to get visually perfect.

There are many more advantages and reasons that I love this type of glue, and reversibility is definitely high up there. Hot hide glues do offer the same benefit, but as it cools it starts to bite, which is something to be aware of. As a professional hand tool woodworker, Richard found hand tools to be the far more efficient solution for a one man workshop.

Richard runs 'The English Woodworker' as an online resource and video education for those looking for a fuss free approach to building fine furniture by hand. I have an outdoor bench project nearing the top of the queue, and I think I will use marine epoxy for locking down the joinery. I make signs for a living, no need to go with epoxy. Titebond 3 is Titebond Liquid Hide Glue Guitar Repair Jpg all I use, have never had a sign fail, Even if the wood is left natural to the elements.

For normal use it shoulder be ok, like a workbench. Excellent post. This is a good point. I finally got it in and drove the draw bores home in time, but man, what stress!

I have a table I built a few years ago that has a slight shadow around the table top glue joints. Also, really enjoying the table build. Better than the titebond, and you can use it hot or straight from the bottle, even for veneer work. Always have an extra bottle in the fridge, you know, for like fries and stuff.

Namely that skateboards are only made with PVA and, if Titebond Liquid Hide Glue Guitar Repair Lab made with hide glue, would likely de-laminate after a couple hours skating outside on a hot sunny day. This sounds like the perfect reason to make a test board with hide glue to see if it does fail.

My limited and growing experience with Hide Glue makes me think that you might not know the difference, as long as you take the board in out of the rain. I very much like hide glue and will use it whenever I see fit. For difficult glue ups, this is what I was taught from Day One: Calmly apply the glue on both surfaces.

And then reheat it with a hair dryer or paint stripper, before closing the joint. If you want to be sure, reheat the closed joint to let the glue flow once more.

Another option is to pre-heat the joint before applying glue. This will triple the setting time. But this only works when closing one joint at a time. I got the hide glue pit from Lee Valley and love it. What I enjoy most is that for smaller glueups, you just hold the pieces together for a minute while the glue cools enough to hold it.

The process took me right back in my mind to building model cars as a kid. I have used nothing but hide glue for several years.

I make my own version of Old Brown Glue by adding some urea to the hot glue mix. I also add a couple of drops of pure cedar wood oil that acts as a biocide and helps keep fungus at bay. By adding more urea the glue stays open longer and vice versa. People are always telling me you cant make a rubbed joint with liquid hide glue but I have done it. It is faster with my OBG and faster still with neat hot hide glue.

I am also frequently told hide glue is no good in a damp place — not true. Although you can take hide glued parts apart if you have a large contact area then it is very difficult to do. The difference is that of destructive vs. What that means is that one can take a hide glue joint apart if one knows how, and if one is willing to be patient without removing of any actual wood.

One cannot take a Titebonded joint apart without losing at least a little bit of the original wood: one undoes the joint and then needs to do some sanding or scraping to expose fresh wood.

But in craftsman-level guitar work, which can allow for more carefully titrated and thicknessed parts, the loss of a few thousandths of an inch of wood may make a difference in sound. In this realm, having the instrument be as fully original as possible is desirable: alterations and modifications of any kind can devalue the instrument.

So, in these cases, it is preferable to find that the guitar has been held together with hide glue: the parts can be taken apart and reglued while maintaining fidelity to the original sizes, thicknesses, and specifications of the woods, not to mention the original intent and methodology of the maker.

But Titebond is a synthetic glue, not an organic one, and it has unexpected staying power. I should add that with both of these glues one heats a joint that is to be undone, so as to soften the glue and help it release its hold. Titebond is only partially un-doable.

This property of it impressed itself on me in an interesting and accidental way. The Titebond soon hardened and rendered the ball-bearing ballast permanent, and the jar held my pencils and pens nicely. Some years later I was able to afford a real pencil holder, so I transferred the pens and pencils and filled the old jar with hot water so as to melt the Titebond and reclaim the ball bearings.

It softened enough that I could squeeze the ball bearings back out, but what remained was a honeycombed, spongelike mass of rubbery aliphatic resin that looked like a coral reef — and that hardened up rock Titebond Liquid Hide Glue Guitar Repair Inc solid again as soon as it dried out.

See the accompanying photos. It also has to do with how the adhesive achieves its results. In the case of the newer glues such as Titebond, these grab onto the materials they come into contact with by means of penetrative adhesion: they sink into wood fibers and grab hold. And once there, they want to stay. The upshot is that undoing such a joint usually results in some splintering, tearing, or pulling up of wood fibers, and thus leaving a rough surface that will itself need to be smoothed before any regluing can occur.

Hide glue, on the other hand, achieves its results by molecular bonding.
