Use three screws to attach the arm to the leg and arm bracket. Use a spacer to help position it. Now prepare the upper rear crosspiece. Prepare the part by using the pattern provided on page 41 for the inside curve. Tilt the band saw table appropriately then saw the curve.

Sand the edges. The upper rear crosspiece is attached below the chair arms. There should be sufficient space to secure the arms and crosspiece with two carriage bolts at each end. When done, install the four bolts. At this point, your Adirondack chair should begin to take shape. Aside from plugging the screw holes, only installation of the back and seat slats remain before the job is done. The back slats are the first slats to make.

Prepare the back slats by using the patterns for the top edges as shown in the diagram on page 41, then band saw the shapes. Fan out the back pieces in their proper order to make sure you rout the correct edges.

Now install the back slats. To get the right look, proper spacing of the slats is important. Start with the center slat, placing it dead center in the back. I used four screws for each back slat, inserting one in the bottom, then made sure the top was positioned properly, then I secured it with three more.

Be careful drilling the screw holes and countersink for the upper crosspiece as these must be done on an angle, drilling straight into the Plan Chaise Adirondack Bercante Jack crosspiece, but at an angle to the back slat. Next, install the outer back slats. Secure it, then position the upper portion so that it touches the inside edge of the arm.

Fasten it. Once both outside pieces are in place, the remaining two intermediate slats are merely positioned with equal spaces between their adjoining slats.

Connect the points with a straightedge. Then, on that edge mark a point 10" from the end. Connect these points to make a cutting line for the other taper. Cut the two taper cuts with a circular saw. Use the tapered leg as a template to mark and cut identical tapers on the other leg of the chair. The legs form the sides of the box frame, which supports the seat slats.

Cut the apron and seat support to size. Attach the apron to the front ends of the legs with glue and 3" deck screws. Attach the seat support between the legs, making sure the part tops are flush. Cut the seat slats to length, and sand the ends smooth. Fasten the seat slats by drilling counterbored pilot holes and driving 2" deck screws through the holes and into the tops of the apron and seat support.

Keep the counterbores aligned so the cedar plugs used to fill the counterbores form straight lines across the front and back of the seat. Cut the back slats to length. First, mark points 1" in from the outside top corners. Then, mark Plan Chaise Adirondack Bercante Un points 1" down from the corners on the outside edges. Connect the points and trim along the lines with a saw. Draw cutting lines and trim the same way these are the outer slats on the Plan Chaise Adirondack Bercante De back.

Cut the low back brace and the high back brace and set them on a flat surface. The untrimmed ends of the slats should be flush with the bottom edge of the low back brace.
