Golden Rule #1 Your miter saw or the miter gauge on your table saw must be set to EXACTLY 45°. G. The next challenge with miters is applying pressure at 90° to the mitered surfaces, and in the center of the joint. To help, I use the small triangular offcuts from the mitering process as clamping cauls. Sometimes I glue them to thin 1⁄4-in. MDF strips. I clamp a pair of these at each corner of the frame during glue-up. These work very well for picture frames, but I take a different approach for situations where it’s not convenient to clamp them to a frame from the inside, such as a frame-and-panel assembly.  In these cases I just glue the offcuts to the frame pieces and then bandsaw and plane them off after assembly. Pressure where you need it. When clamping on the cauls, align the corner blocks so that clamping pressure is centered across the joints. Glued on cauls. Use the offcuts. Improve this question. My problem is, that the piece tends to get drawn to the plane, no matter how hard I hold on to it.

Do you have any advice on this? Elbonian, not sure what you mean by "drawn to the plane". A word of caution though, by making that surface less slippy it makes a shooting board much harder to use since it's much more difficult to shift the workpiece along incrementally for each planing pass. But how's your sharpening? If your honing could perhaps do with some improvement I'd look at that first. Sign up or log in Sign up using Google.
