End grain is one of those things that can really bite you in the butt if you don’t prep your projects properly. Many times, you finish sanding and everything looks and feels great, but then you apply the finish and all of a sudden your project looks like it was made from two different woods! The end grain soaked up so much finish/stain that it now appears to be a much darker color. Since the end grain is on a different face, where shadows can sometimes play tricks on the eye, you can usually get away with this color discrepancy and few people will ever notice.  Now in some woods, sanding to a higher grit just doesn’t do the trick. Or maybe you are just a little lazy and you don’t want to do the extra sanding. Well there is still hope. 11 The End of End-Grain Turning In MY Shop! 12 Or, Is It Really the End? The Origin of the Wood. My Dad (shout-out to Steve here) had given me several pieces of Eastern Black Walnut that were too nice and large to chunk up for pen blanks, so one of them was turned into a bottle stopper while the other piece I decided I would use to try out the process of end-grain turning to make a small hollow vessel. It all sounded so easy and grand.  For those of you who don’t know, end-grain turning refers to the turnery process of hollowing out a hollow form or bowl by turning into the end-grain of the wood. Technically, the end grain is the grain seen when the wood is cut across the growth rings. The grain ends up parallel to the bed of the lathe when the piece is mounted. Wood workers will find a wood turning project for creating a beautiful bowl in end grain.  Recently I was asked on the user group, www.- rning, to explain how to turn a natural edged, end grain bowl. That is, a bowl with the grain running parallel to the lathe bed and the edge of the log left as the bowl edge. If you want a smooth edged bowl, just turn the piece round as you start. It will make sense as we go. I cut a piece of yellow birch to rough out a natural edged bowl and found it to be wonderfully spalted. During the process I cut a slice off the end to get past any cracks. This wood is too good to waste so I have decided to use the slice for this bowl. I will have.
Turning an End Grain Lidded Box Turning an end grain lidded box differs primarily in the way the wood is oriented on the lathe and the tools that are used. Whereas the ring boxes previously described were turned in the face plate orientation, end grain lidded boxes are turned with the grain running the length of box in the spindle orientation. Oct 15,  · I’m going to proffer the following hypothesis for your unexpected results between stain at 4grit. My guess is that at the microscopic level at grit there are tiny fuzzies that are literally clogging the pores of the wood not allowing as much stain pigment in. Sanding to grit would have removed most of these fuzzies thus opening the pores and allowing more saturation.
