Tell us what you think Thanks for adding your feedback. Lay the legs on top of the first ladder legs then attach the rungs matching the first ones and the second ladder will be complete.
Lay the ladders on their sides. Attach the side rungs following the layout of the rungs on the ladder pieces. This is where you will see why the side rungs are 3 inches longer than the ladder rungs. They overlap the ends of the ladder rungs covering their ends.
On this particular obelisk the top is on the larger side. I wanted this so I could put something up there, even a potted plant. There is so many ways you could add a finishing touch here. Find or cut out a silhouette of your favorite farm animal, put a windmill on it, or find a weather vane to attach. You can paint this any color you wish or stain it.
I used an organic tung oil on some of mine and it really helps them hold up for years even though it is built out of cheaper wood. Pre-drill holes for screws. This will prevent splitting. Fasten the rung to the legs 24 inch piece. Now attach your other cross pieces or rungs.
Measure from the bottom of the bottom rung and the top of the top rung. Divide that measurement by 4 to get placements for the rungs. We marked the spots for each rung. This set of rungs are 3 inches longer than the ladder rungs, they will overlap the first set covering their ends. Make sure you check out this super easy Arbor we built from this Obelisk Idea! My husband showed me how to use the "chop saw" and the drill and power screwdriver.
I did it! It was perfect! I wanted to buy a climbing rose for it this year but money is too tight. Just came back to say thank you! Great project to build on a Sunday afternoon. Just finished building one;so easy. Just gotta find what color to paint. Raised garden beds are a convenient way to make the most out of your garden. With good drainage, protection from weeds and many pests, plus well-aerated soil perfectly blended to encourage growth, raised beds are a great choice for those with limited space, soil or sunlight restrictions or just an appreciation for higher yields from less effort.
Raised garden beds come in a variety of sizes and styles, but can be pricey. For those interested in raised bed gardening without the expense, this raised garden bed DIY project is easy to build in an afternoon even for beginners for a fraction of the cost of store-bought kits.
Editor's note: Though pressure-treated lumber in the past was treated with arsenic, today's pressure treated wood is instead preserved with MCA micronized copper azole or ACQ alkaline copper quarternary , which contain copper compounds as wood preservatives. These pressure-treated woods are commonly considered safe to use around edibles. If you are still concerned about copper leaching into the soil, for your peace of mind, you can line your raised bed interior sides with heavy plastic sheeting or use redwood or cedar instead.
Never use upcycled wood treated with creosote for any garden application. Creosote is a potential carcinogen commonly used in telephone poles and railroad ties, and can leach into soil. Rest the other 8-foot plank perpendicular to the attached 4-foot plank at the free end. Use a carpenter's square to line up at 90 degrees and sink screws to attach. Repeat the assembly process at the other end, using a carpenter's square as you go to make sure angles are square.
More elaborate raised beds may use braces at the corners to maintain shape, but the long screws used here will keep the bed intact until is it filled with soil to fortify the structure. Drainage issues, poor soil conditions and crop-choking weeds are a thing of the past with this inexpensive and easy-to-build raised bed. Photo By: Photo by Mick Telkamp.
