What are Wood Oils and Where are They Best Used? - Wood Finishes Direct

May 25,  · My personal preference is for an oil/varnish mixture treatment. Either use Minwax Tung Oil Finish, Minwax Antique oil or a homebrew of equal parts of boiled linseed oil, your favorite varnish or poly varnish and mineral spirits. Sand the benchtop up to grit. Apply the mixture heavily and keep it wet for minutes. Many are linseed oil or tung oil based. You could also use boiled linseed oil. Wipe on oils will give some protection without having a "film" appearance to make the surface slick (like a brushed applied varnish /polyurethane would). A slick surface is NOT what you want for a workbench top. Avoid "raw" linseed oil. It takes a very long time to dry. Dec 11,  · Michael Dresdner: I'll be happy to tell you how to do a gloss finish on your bench, but that still leaves me wondering why. A workbench, as its name implies, is to work on, and frankly, the best surface to work on is raw wood. It is less slippery, takes all sorts of abuse, and best of all, can be easily cleaned and resurfaced when needed.
