I am looking for better wood to use for small boxes, largely for gaming (deck boxes, board games, etc). Things (similar) (to) (these). I have been using 1/4" red oak and basswood as it is convenient and cheap to acquire. The problem is, at this scale, red oak's grain is a pain to work with using hand tools, and basswood is just plain boring and a bit too soft to do any real joinery. I also have some old salvaged boards of what I think is red cedar, but again, the grain sucks at that scale and I can snap a board along the grain with four fingers. My short-term goals include getting be. Plus, small boxes are lightweight, which makes them a nice respite if we’ve logged hours muscling larger timbers around the shop.
