Digital machines have been around for a while, but have become more affordable in the past few years and are appealing to more and more hobbyists. The primary tool here is the CNC machine that makes precision cuts on flat pieces of wood using a router. You will need to layout and design all of your work on a computer and the machine will take care of the rest, cutting out all your pieces.

The second tool some hobbyists invest in is a laser cutter or engraver. This tool allows you to make even more precise cuts than a CNC and create some beautiful art. The biggest drawbacks to using digital machines are their cost. You can easily spend thousands of dollars on them. They have their limitations and you will probably still want a tablesaw and other power tools in your shop.

Thus it is safer and financially convenient to use simple and minimalist setups for working on woodworking projects. However, make sure the sure that the surfaces are even and you have the basic tools required. It is needless to say that getting the right piece of wood is mandatory for woodwork.

There are not many guidelines regarding the select wood. However, there are some rules one should abide by to get the best result.

First and foremost, one should get a straight wooden log. This means that there should not be any wraps or bowed, if you have an uneven wood then you will require a saw or a mill to make it level before any basic operation can be done.

In order to detect whether it is straight or not, one may hold the log by its length with on end down towards the ground. This helps a great deal in determining the actual shape of the wood which may appear perfectly straight horizontally.
