In order to stay in budget, an unfinished neck is $60 cheaper. Tung oil doesn't protect against dirt, stains, or dings at all. And on a koa body that's sad. The guitar is filthy (thanks to the prior 15 years, not my five), and the dirt can't be removed with anything but sanding. At some point I'm going to refinish the guitar, but I'll have to sand down past the dirt and stain layer to get to decent wood. I've got a second all-koa guitar that was done in poly in , and it's still gorgeous. I think the finish is fine if the guitar is essentially a closet queen, or part of a rotation with other guitars.  Neck-only tung oil is a whole different thing from an entire neck and body done in tung oil. I'm looking pretty seriously at getting a CT, but I have some questions regarding the neck finishes. I know exactly what you get with a glossy neck finish, and I'm not interested in that. I would like to focus on satin vs. As far as I can tell, both finishes are meant to make the neck feel like bare wood.

What is the difference between the two finishes? What are the pros and cons of each? Why would you choose tung oil over satin or vise-versa? Post by jeweinrebe » Wed Jan 14, pm With the tung oil you will feel the bare wood.

With the satin finish it has a clear finish but it is very smooth. I personally prefer the satin finish because it protects the neck a little. Post by Mooseboy » Wed Jan 14, pm I have two tung oil necks, one satin neck, one gloss neck given the "satin treatment", and one gloss neck.

I like the tung and satin necks best, no preference between the two. And welcome to the forum! Post by SnappleMan » Thu Jan 15, am I heard or read somewhere that Carvin used a satin paint that wouldn't buff to gloss. Always wondered is that even existed. Said in another way: Satin on Mahogany feels closer to Tung Oiled Maple, than tung oiled mahogany does. Think about it. Hope it makes sense. Post by toejam » Thu Jan 15, pm I've got all three finishes on Carvins, and I like them all.

Tung oiled maple is nice, but I actually like tung oiled mahogany very much, too. Coming from EBMM. I also love the satin neck feel. I guess it depends on the feel you like. Personally , I can feel the the pours in the wood, so it can be distracting. I can speak from experience that tung oil is awesome, but I bet tru-oil is great too. Oh and to answer your question Lee, basically it gives the wood a coating so that it's protected from dirt getting in the grain, etc And so I've heard the more you put on there the glossier it can get and can essentially act like a lacquer finish.

You can read up on it on teh Wikipedia Because I'd love to have the back of my neck protected from grime and stuff, but, I want to retain the smooth satin-like feeling I've gotten. Yep, should do it The Jackson neck I did feels essentially like bare wood How many coats should I rub on? I didn't do any steel wool, just sanded down the wood to the point where the old finish was gone, and then got under way For each coat I just used enough oil to get a nice shine going; not too much that it was thick.

I used an old T-shirt that I didn't care about any more, dribbled some tung oil on it and got down to business. I think I could get to the bare wood if I used this steel wool enough. But what type of sand paper did you use? I don't know the right word to use.. Or level? You can do something like that by hand, right? I'd like to get a bit of gloss going, so it'll match the rest of the guitar's glossy look.

The discoloration at the headstock joint is due to Tung Oil Food Safe Quest a repaired crack; the glue changed the absorption of the oil into the wood so that it appears a different color.
