I also could never fully understand how to figure out how to use the gauges on the tool to hold how to set it up to get the correct placement and depth, so I just experimented on scrap wood until I got it right.

Once I got the right setting, it worked great except it is easy for the tool to move or slip while using if you aren't careful.
