Jointer Plane. Top Selected Products and Reviews. Faithfull No.7 Jointing Plane.  Considering the price paid, I wasn't expecting much, but this plane was surprisingly good quality. Apart from a quick sharpen of the iron the plane was ready to go, a bit more fettling to taste (smooth up the cap iron/chip breaker, round off the toe and heel). The sole was flat, the depth adjust yoke/'Y' lever was a nice cast part not stamped metal as you usually get on budget planes, and the tote and knob were well finished and secure. Overall it looks great and works well. For a beginner looking for a jointer you'd be hard pressed to find a better entry. (11). Add to Bask. Buying guide for best jointers Jointers vs. planers What size jointer? Jointer features What does a good jointer cost? Buying guide for best jointers. There are many reasons to buy a jointer.  Jointers can be very useful for turning low quality lumber, like pallets, into useable material. Be careful, though. Hidden nails or staples will ruin jointer knives.  In the past, the only tool woodworkers had for shaping wood was the hand plane. Whether you wanted to flatten or square a piece of wood, or shave the thickness, a hand plane was the tool you used. It's common to see electrical versions of this tool, and they're fine for general woodworking. However, when it comes to squaring, they have no real advantage over the manual tool. In fact, some feel that electric planers are too aggressive. For a beginner looking for a jointer you'd be hard pressed to find a better entry. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. I tend to grip hold good quality jointer plane uk my older ones still which seem to do a better job Ordered one Planing seems to work fine, but if you can only use that, you would be better off getting a dedicated planer like the DeWalt DW or DW Faithfull No.

Some people may be skeptical of machines in this price range, but IF you get one that is straight and correctly adjusted, they can actually deliver good jointing and planing results. However, that is a big IF. But these problems can all be solved by the user himself, by finetuning all the separate parts. The problem with these benchtop jointer planers, like the Jet and Scheppach , is that they cannot be adjusted very well.

But there are a few second hand options you could look at, such as the Inca Jointer It lacks automatic feed, making it more work to use, but the final cut and build quality is much higher than any of the new machine in this price range. Alternatively, you could consider purchasing a benchtop planer also called lunchbox planer , combined with either jointing with a hand plane, or simply buying lumber that is already reasonably flat.

There are also special jigs called planer beds for benchtop planers that allow you to flatten your boards. There are some new machines available in this price range, but they are not that great I will mention them among the alternatives.

And since there are plenty of quality vintage jointer planers available in this price range, I would recommend going that route instead. This is one of the most popular vintage jointer planer combos in both the US and Europe.

It was built from the early s through 80s, and set the industry standard of what a compact and lightweight jointer planer should look like.

Many current designs are inspired by this machine. It is made of cast aluminium, and uses high quality materials all around. Many moving parts are made of brass, ensuring smooth movement, for example when lowering the infeed table. The only possible downside is the fence, which is a bit flimsy compared to the stability and precision of Good Quality Jointer Plane For Sale the rest of the machine.

Because the Inca Automatic is so popular, it can be relatively expensive, but good deals can still be found. It will just work and be precise without any effort on your part. This is a classic jointer planer made by DeWalt in the s and early s. Its main selling points are its cast-iron body, making a really sturdy machine, and its folding tables.

It has a good amount of power, and can be finely adjusted. I repaired one recently, and was impressed by the build quality. Because it is less well-known than the Inca, you may be able to find it for a really good price, even though it will perform just as well. There are two versions of this machine, the older DW50 , and the newer DW The latter is preferred, because it has a much better fence.

The DW50 has a sloppy fence that you would need to attach a straight piece of wood to to make it work properly. It seems the build quality of the jointer tables is really poor on this machine, making it extremely difficult to keep the infeed and outfeed table in one plane.

Without that, you will never be able to joint a clean, straight edge. Planing seems to work fine, but if you can only use that, you would be better off getting a dedicated planer like the DeWalt DW or DW If you get a decent model that is well-calibrated from the start, it can be a very usable machine, especially for beginning woodworkers and DIYers.

The reason is simple, these two machines are almost identical, but neither is available everywhere. Both jointer planers are based on the original design of the Elektra Beckum HC Metabo acquired the Elektra Beckum brand somewhere in the early s, and licenses out the design to other firms, like Rikon. Both the Metabo and Rikon are made in China. The Metabo has a better build quality, and has had a few subtle improvements over the years.

The Rikon looks much more like the original design, and still has the same blade guard which I also still have on my Elektra Beckum model — I actually prefer this type of blade guard. What you get get with the Metabo most of all is peace of mind. They are the people who invented and have perfected this design for decades. By buying the Metabo you basically get a guarantee that it will work well from the start.

With licensed machines like the Rikon, the build quality and quality control is generally slightly inferior, but still quite good. If you get a good model, there is really no significant difference between the two machines, and you will get equal planing and jointing results.

One unique upgrade that is available to the Rikon, but not on the Metabo or most alternative models is a helical head. However, this makes the machine much more expensive and puts it in a much higher price range.

Maybe one day this machine will be available there too. The Jet JPT is a tried and tested machine that has been on the market some time.

Its good reputation and reliability is one of the main reasons why I have picked it over some cheaper China-made machines from less well-known distributors. One of its best features as demonstrated in the video of Peter Parfitt below is that it converts extremely quickly from planing to jointing and vice versa.

Both tables lift simultaneously, and the fence can stay attached. Not only does it go quickly, you also get to keep all the settings on your fence and tables. Create a free account. Have a question? There was a problem completing your request. Please try your search again later.

I bought this on the basis of good reviews and those saying the plane was fine after tuning. As someone who has bought several old Stanleys on Ebay and rejuvenated them, a bit of fettling didn't scare me. However, this was the worst mechanical condition I've ever seen a plane in though it's redeeming feature was a base that could be made flat and wasn't too bad out of the box which I why I give the plane 2 stars rather than 1.

However, some of the rest of the machining was appalling and the lever cap design is poor in my opinion. Unfortunately, after I'd quickly sanded the base flat, I was tuning a replacement Axminster Rider iron when I discovered the frog was not seated correctly. Bad machining meant the frog was leaning on the adjustment screw and had bent it.

I couldn't see any way to fix this without a lot of work so left the screw out so, at least, the frog would sit at 45 degrees. I'm not planing on moving the frog in normal use but I would have returned the plane for this fault if I had noticed it before I started tuning. Getting the iron to seat properly required filing of the area around the mouth where some excess paint and bad moulding needed removal.

I spent quite some time getting the machined frog surfaces flat too. I'm not keen on the lever cap hole design as being a keyhole shape means it's prone to slipping up on the screw when retracting the blade. Stanley knew about this in when their kidney-shaped hole appeared. After a replacement iron and a couple of days of work, I've got a reasonable and flat No 7. However, I had to fix far too many basic manufacturing faults to get there so - 2 stars.

I'd have much preferred to have paid Faithfull a little more for improved factory machining. For the price, this is an excellent plane. The base is flat, the sides are square, the handles are comfortable, the adjusters work, the frog is roughly true. However, the blade is terrible. When it arrived I flattened the back of the blade and sharpened it, it took a good edge and I set to work using it.

I was flattening a piece of ash but before I'd finished I stated noticing lines in the otherwise smooth surface left after a pass of the plane. A magnifying glass showed several small nicks in the edge of the blade, something I've not seen in any of my other planes and certainly not what I'd expect after a very limited amout of use.

I went back to my old Stanley No 6 while I waited for a replacement blade a Stanley to arrive. Neither the No 6, nor the Faithful No 7 once fitted with a new blade showed the sort of chipping on the edge that I was getting on the Faithful blade.

Overall a good plane but budget for an additional blade. Photo shows the chipped edge of the blade taken by holding a jeweller's magnifying glass up against my phone - the edge looks curved because of the lens.

Images in this review. Had to return the first one as the cast iron frog was snapped go figure but by the miracle that is Amazon a replacement arrived the next day.

As commented by others, this would deserve more stars if there were no obvious signs of rough handling, specifically post machining dinks in the casting that need grinding out with an oilstone, and the most important part, the blade, is The blade was severely dinked on the cutting edge, requiring over a millimeter of steel to be ground away.

Not so easy with only a bench grinder to hand. It then took elbow grease and an oilstone to produce a cutting edge. Micro-fractures running along the length of the blade can be clearly seen : On the upside, the blade is hard forged steel and despite the fractures it is now doing an excellent job of finishing sawn sides on MDF panels, although I expect the blade to fall apart at any time and must acquire a real one sooner rather than later.

This is OK at this price point, but please do replace the blade with something decent. The supplied blade wasn't an even thickness and the bevel was all over the place.

After half an hour I gave up on the grid diamond stone I put in a blade Axminster blade for their no. So OK, if the blade is replaced. Maybe I was unlucky, but the overall finish is of a cheap tool, but for the amount I am likely to use it, I can't justify the cost of the Axminster Rider equivalent.

Need to sharpen and hone the blade before first use. Also the base of the plane was poorly ground, spent a lot of time grinding it on a diamond block to alleviate some of the scouring, still need to work on it using a coarser grade to remove material sufficiently to bring the base to a reasonable surface. Still does a reasonable job on coarse work. One person found this helpful. Considering the price paid, I wasn't expecting much, but this plane was surprisingly good quality.
