It would handle turning pen blanks. If that is all you want to turn, it seems adequate. I use a Jet midi-lathe which is a great model as is the Delta midi-lathe. You get more capability out of the midi-lathes such as variable speed and even the ability to reverse the direction -> turn towards yourself and sand away.  nah that is the perfect size for turning pens.
