Hand planes can be basic tools, advanced detailers, and prized collector’s items. Here are the three types of basic hand planes: The Basics. Okay, let’s start with the basics. These are hand planes you should have in your shop. Nothing fancy, just the hand plane you’ll be reaching for most of the time. I’ve chosen three that follow a common order from roughest to smoothest. When planing one begins with a cruder bench plane that can handle unruly or raw stock.  The blade is either sharpened to be very straight, with a slight arch, or with rounded corners. This is to prevent any grooves or waves as its purpose is to create the smoothest, finest surface for a finished project. Build. Each type of hand plane is intended to assist on a specific task. History of Hand Planes.  There are 4 types of bench planes namely the smoothing planes, fore planes, jointer planes and jack planes which are used in different stages of woodworking. Another type of hand plane is the block plane. Characterized as a small tool that can be used with one hand, there are a lot of uses of the block plane. It can be used to effectively make a bevel or chamfer. Also, it can trim and smooth end grain which is its main purpose. Chisel planes are a special type of plane that lack any form of guard in front of the blade. This allows them to get right up to the edge of a cut and clean where other planes cannot reach. They’re also the most commonly kitbashed plane due to their simplicity.  Designed for flattening out long surfaces and straightening edges, this class of hand planes includes those that are long and wide. This allows them to not only cover more area, but keep a much straighter cut than the competition. A No. 7 is the most common type of leveling plane and is often referred to as a jointer plane. The No. 6 fore plan is the second most common leveling plane and is the same width as the No. 7 but a few inches shorter. The less common No. 8 is both longer and wider than either and good for very large projects.

Although we see this in most tool manufactures, we see this more in Sargent planes than we generally do in others. It also seems like there is also more variations and more building rkund plane at a time type work than we see in other manufactures as well. Instances of this would be a type 4 base may have the name raised in a square AND the size of the plane behind the frog, or the size may be missing, OR the base may be void of any casting marks at all. The best approach when determining the planes age is to start with the lateral, hamd verify the base.

The lateral should get you close, especially on the older planes. Also a plane with a type 4 base and all other or at least a majority of type 3 parts more often seen in planes Sargent made for house brands would be considered an How Many Types Of Hand Planes Are There Volume early type 4 where a very late type 3 would be a type 3 base with all or at least a tound of other type 4 parts.

If you are trying to date the plane this narrows it down to a short period before or after the transition. As time passes, we may find more sub types that can 4 types of hand planes round added to the ot.

Type 0 Sargent series……………. We have now found it on a as well. Type 1 Sargent series……. Type 2 Sargent series………. Sargent and Co. Top and New Haven Ct bottom. Corrugated will be a Sargent Type — — Series. Type 3 Sargent series. Type 4 Sargent series……VBM………. Here is a 4a frog. It is unknown whether the Type 4 bases started 4 types of hand planes round or after The 4a Type may be before or it may be Sargent just using up parts after the VBM designation was started.
