Might I suggest you try the following method? Do your engraving and finish it with fine sandpaper as needed. Place you finished piece face down onto a piece of cloth that has been soaked with sanding sealer. Turn it over and let it dry. Next you can apply a darker stain and it will only soak into the deeper areas that did not touch the cloth.
