The WoodRiver planes are really, really good. In my mind they're sort of the entry level premium hand tools. /u/joelav said their blades are just about dead flat right out of the package. That's my vote, but if you aren't seeing a price break, I'd get the Veritas.  I strongly prefer L-N bench planes in general but in the LAJ category, I see the Veritas as the clear winner. The thumb divot for shooting is better than the ($60!) hotdog attachment available at L-N. The Veritas also has extra mass and a wider blade. When I put the Veritas LAJ (2 1/4" iron) on my shooting Woodriver Vs Bench Dog Planes Llc board, I can shoot a 2" wide piece.
