For clamps, here in the US, Harbor Freight has good bar clamps but the hollow bar needs to be fitted with wood to make them sturdier. However two questions: 1. Do you think maybe one or two more planes jointer and Plough Plane could make things significantly easier for a beginner I have no doubt that you can joint long edges with a nr 5, but maybe not a beginner? What about flattening the stones? Or how long do these oilstones stay flat? New ploughs are very expensive, so if you see an old one at a good price, then jump on it! You could always build your own wooden jointer though — in the exact same methods we used in our wooden hand plane build.

For most edge jointing though, I do prefer to use a shorter plane, as I like to put slight cups along the length and I actually find this gives me more control.
