But all the "extra" is too much for detailed fine work like jointing edges and flattening surfaces less than a table top. There are sayings like "More is better. They aren't really true. You can have too much of a good thing in some situations. Yeah it is 10 pounds, but it is very wide and very, very accurate. You can easily straighten 48 inch long boards with one and it is great for flattening one face of a board after you use a jack to knock high spots off.

It's also lighter than 8. I love my 7 but really only use it for edge planing.

Using a 7 for jointing faces is very tiring, and if you have winding sticks and a good straight edge, you don't need to rely on the length of a 7 to achieve a flat face. With a nice sharp iron it "sings" and that sound alone is so satisfying.

I used to use it a lot but manage now with my machines and so, about 2 months ago, I gave it to a woodworking apprentice that I met a few days earlier. Thanks for the replies so far.

I guess I'm leaning towards the no. I was considering the LV as well, but since they make a magnetic fence, I figure I could just add this to the LN jointer if I find it necessary. BTW, I am discovering all of these muscles I don't get to use with power tools.

For those not familiar, there are plans showing how to make a shooting board available for download at the Lie-Nielsen website. Shooting can work on end grain to sneak up on the exact dimension a thousandth of an inch or so at a time , can work on long grain, or with fence modifications, can shoot angles miters other than 90 degrees on the ends of boards.

The Jointer plane is set up similarly to most of the other bench planes. The blade should be razor sharp which is the same on all cutting tools , and many will want to apply a small camber curvature across the width of the iron. This small cambering prevents the all-dreaded plane tracks, which are left when the corner s of the iron cut deeper into the wood than the surface adjoining it. The shaving thickness should be in the 4 — 5 thousands of an inch range, and so the camber should be sufficient that neither of the corners will make Jointer Plane Used Zip Code contact with this thickness of shaving.

Most of the time though, the jointer can do an adequate job, and depending on how large the area being worked is, it may just save the extra couple of steps over to your toolbox. Two hands are used with the tool, so the natural thought is that you can simply move the tool back and forth or side to side. This could work, but will not be very efficient. Be sure to note the direction of the grain, and plan to plane as much as possible along that same line. Grip the back handle with your rear hand, making sure that your index finger does not try to find a place to rest on the iron or chip breaker.

Pressing against these can knock the lateral adjustment out of whack. Make sure your forearm is in a straight line behind the jointer plane following the direction of the sole. With the front hand, hold onto the tote, or front handle, with a comfortable strong grip.

Lean forward, putting the strength and stability of your body behind it. Push from the back hand while pressing down with the front hand, keeping the sole as flat on the surface as possible. Forward strokes should be straight, while bringing the jointing plane back to its original position is often easier to do in a half-arc.

On a wide, long surface, you can perform this action in a rapid, but smooth, motion. For narrow edges and ends of planks, use a slow, steady motion. Since there is very little material surface to keep the sole flat, it is easy to tilt to the sides if moving too quickly. Check your shavings as they come out of the jointer plane — they should be even from side to side. If one side is thicker than the other, you are creating a bevel that will need to be corrected.
