Southern Yellow Pine (often referred to as SYP) is a designated group of four species growing in the Southern United States. The four species are: Shortleaf Pine (Pinus echinata), Slash Pine (Pinus ellioti), Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris), and Loblolly Pine (Pinus taeda). All share similar characteristics such as high density and an abrupt earlywood to latewood transition which gives them a distinct grain pattern. Microscopically they are difficult to differentiate; hence, they are grouped together.  Historically, Longleaf Pine was the desired species to be cut into lumber. Slow growing, it produced wood with very tight grow rings. It also grew large enough to create a heart with a distinct reddish brown hue. Longleaf Pine was utilised in all manner of structural applications. Yellowing needles on evergreens such as pine trees cause concern and warrant immediate control to prevent spread and retain health. Because a number of factors cause the needles to turn yellow, you need to diagnose the cause of the discoloration before treating the problem and adopting strategies to prevent future outbreaks. Cause. A number of reasons cause yellowing needles on a pine tree. An improper planting site causes the needles on a newly transplanted pine tree to turn yellow. Lack of irrigation or exposure to extreme drought damages causes the needles at the top of the tree to turn yel. You have to heat the wood to °F to set all the sap. Otherwise it will ooze out, even through shellac or other sealers. February 9,   About 3 months ago I built a wheel chair ramp out of the wood and now sap is beginning to ooze from the boards in a few places. These boards are in direct summer sun all day long on the ramp. I have recently moved some of the lumber into my air conditioned shop and planed it to thickness, with the thought of building some bookshelves for the house.

Oct 09,  · Wood Turning Southern Yellow Pine Bowl. Pine takes on a pale yellow-orange tone after exposure to sunlight. Most finishes exacerbate the problem leaving wood which ages to a "cigarette yellow" tone. The best way to create a pale bleached effect is to treat with a thin coat of diluted White Wood Dye after sanding. The wood will change color eventually no matter what you do. However, you can do two things to slow down that process. Use a water-based polyurethane finish. All other finishes are either slightly yellow going on, or themselves yellow with age.
