Paints and Stains — If the wood is dry, oil-based paints and stains may be applied immediately. To apply a water-based coating, wait for the surface of the wood to weather to allow even penetration and adherence to wood. Hint: If water beads on the surface, it is too soon to apply a water-based coating. Always test the coating on the most shaded part of the deck to make sure it absorbs evenly without blotching.
