The sides of the tenon and mortise must be parallel and smooth. Most woodworkers seem to use some combination of chisels, handsaws, drill press, bench top mortiser, and shop made router jig to cut the joints. For a large project where you might be cutting several dozen joints, it becomes more efficient and expedient to cut the joints by machine. Recently, Leigh Industries (Port Coquitlam, BC) introduced the Leigh Frame Mortise and Tenon Jig (FMT).  Now, after four weeks of using it in my shop I’m convinced that Leigh has hit the mark again: the FMT is without a doubt the best mortise and tenon jig for the money. Read All About It!  Built to Last The FMT is CNC machined from a range of tempered and die-cast aluminum parts. Everything looks and feels first class. Регулируемый шаблон используется с Trend Mortise and Tenon Jig. The mortise-and-tenon joint is fundamental in woodworking. Along with the dovetail, this joint has been used for thousands of years. If you judge by the number of devices and methods developed to avoid making mortises, you might think it difficult and demanding.  A drill press, equipped with a fence and a Forstner bit, is ideal. You can use a bit the exact size of the intended mortise, overlap the holes and be confident that the holes are vertical. This reduces the chisel work to easy paring on the side walls and perhaps a couple of cuts on the ends.  An inexpensive machine might breeze through 5⁄16” or 3⁄8” mortises but give up when you increase the size. You can make mortises larger than the chisel set by making multiple passes. Please select a product. Weight 6. Mortising bits cut square holes. Overview Reviews Documents. Put the pieces together To help assemble a hardboard jig, find a scrap the same thickness as the mortised workpiece. Then, one at a time, glue and clamp the hardboard pieces on top of the cleats, ensuring that the opening is square to the cleats and centered on the jig's width.

Using the jigs Clamp a workpiece with the drilled-out mortise to your bench and align the jig opening with the mortise layout lines. Clamp across the cleats to secure the jig to the workpiece. With a chisel, pare down along the guides, concentrating on keeping the back of the chisel pressed against the guides. Actually, setup is a misnomer--there really is no setup. The Mortise Pal is shipped ready to go. There is nothing to install, adjust, or calibrate. But let's go through the process of preparing to rout mortises with the Mortise Pal. The mortise length equals the template length plus the bit diameter.

Two dowel-index pins ensure that the template is correctly positioned. The template is held in place with two brass Allen Hex head screws. The Mortise Pal provides a stable base, approximately 6" wide. Use the included centering pin to ensure that the guide bushing and base plate are centered with the router's collet.

The first layout line identifies the center of the slot in relation to the workpiece faces. The second layout line identifies the center of the slot vertically on the workpiece. As implied by the right-hand example below, the Mortise Pal can easily rout multiple slots on a single edge. The Mortise Pal provides two indexes to ensure that the slot is correctly placed in the workpiece. The first index is an engraved mark at each end of the template block.

Align this mark with the layout line 1 by sliding the template block towards or away from the fence and lock down with the brass thumbscrew.. The second index consists of two pointers milled into the template block. Align these two pointers with layout line 2 by moving the Mortise Pal left or right across the workpiece and tighten the clamp. But I figured I would offer my videos as well, just to show that someone not affiliated with Mortise Pal can use the jig quite successfully.

You can use the Mortise Pal to perform doweling operations using its doweling template. I recommend that you use a good mechanical pencil with. For best results, especially in hardwoods, use spiral upcut cutters. The Whiteside solid carbide cutters by Mortise Pal are excellent.

I have used them for awhile and they show no signs of dulling. I have also used several inexpensive conventional plunge cutting cutters from MLCS with good success , And of course, metric cutters work perfectly fine.

To ensure consistency and accuracy, gang mark layout line 2. I clamp all like pieces together and mark them at one time. Mark the face and end of the workpiece. Mount the jig so its fence registers against the marked face of the workpiece.

Use a series of plunge cuts then a pass or two with the cutter fully extended to produce clean slots with no burning. If your router's base plate is small, like that of my DW, purchase a round baseplate from Pat Warner. Other companies offer them as well. Just make sure it is machined to accept the Porter-Cable style guide bushing. The Mortise Pal works great with both loose or fixed stub tenons.

It is easy to make your own loose tenon material, especially if you have access to a planer. Absolute Simplicity There are many excellent mortising tools and jigs on the market.

But I doubt any can match the Mortise Pal for ease-of-use. There is nothing to assemble, configure, calibrate, or tweak.
